  1. I’ve Been struggling back and forth this last months to give up something I know is making me feel miserable. I have been making the excuse that it’s to difficult to give up. As someone who is struggling with addiction thank you for sharing this.

    1. Hi Jaden
Thanks for your comment and I am glad you found the podcast helpful. Not doing something because it feels too hard is an excuse we ALL fall prey to at times. The mind truly thinks it is a valid reason and as such, we just don’t do these things. We think we have no choice but to put up with the problem and that’s that. One of the big problems with changing behavior, including addiction, is because we are so used to effecting change through action, so used to seeing ‘doing’ as the level of cause, we often just focus outwardly in trying to make ourselves do and not do things that are ‘good’ and ‘bad’ respectively. We try to muster up willpower, we try to learn coping mechanisms,etc.. Of course all of this has its place but we have to remember our behavior and actions are not just coming out of nowhere–something internal is driving them. We have to see WHY we do what we do–this will make it easier to change the behaviors, even if this road may feel harder because it involves the discomfort of engaging with our pain. On some level we understand this is where our focus needs to be but the outward focus is so deeply ingrained we often literally forget to do this. Just be sure to show yourself some compassion in the process and also be sure to examine any conflicts you have around letting the addiction go, any negative associations–this often sounds silly to us since the circumstances cause so much pain and we want them to change but on a deeper level, there can be a lot going on and there is some sort of ‘payoff’ to keeping things as they are.
