Law of Attraction: Reader Questions about Limiting Beliefs and ‘ Obstacles’

So, as you can see from the title of this post, I am addressing a couple of questions one of my fabulous readers sent in about some aspects of law of attraction that were leaving her a bit confused.

This LOA stuff does seem a bit confusing at times doesn’t it? It can seem really hard. It is easy to get the impression the Universe requires us to jump through a lot of hoops to get our ‘stuff.’

But, as I have gotten deeper into my work with this concept, I have realized it really isn’t that hard at all. We’re the ones who are making it so. It’s totally understandable though.

Our minds have been conditioned to think in a way that really doesn’t vibe with this whole LOA thing, and undoing that programming can take a bit (or a lot) of work. I know I am still dealing with some faulty programming myself. Once we become aware of this concept, we can put a lot of pressure on ourselves to change our ways.

Our logical minds can really get in the way. We have a burning need to have it make ‘sense.’ When the principles get filtered through our brain, we get overloaded with a bunch of thoughts that make us doubt whether this is really how it works; whether it can be this easy.

Furthermore, a lot of material you will find on LOA can leave you feeling a bit unsatisfied. Ask and it is given….that really sums it up pretty well. But, how to go about getting into a state where you really feel this is true, and what you can do to best cultivate this belief, is usually not discussed in great detail. We usually need a bit more to help us work through, and discard, all the mental ‘stuff’ that gets in the way.

I’ll be completely honest with you here. When I first started this blog, I was reluctant to write anything about LOA, because I’m not an expert, and I don’t feel like I understand every nook and cranny of the subject. I certainly wouldn’t volunteer myself to be the ‘face’ of law of attraction and ‘defend’ the concept to an auditorium full of skeptics.

But, then I realized not talking about it would be leaving out a huge chunk of my story, about how I created my life made to order. Consciously working with LOA has been, far and away, the primary ingredient in creating the life I have for myself.

In the last year or so in particular, I have made amazing shifts. It dawned on me that I had a pretty good understanding and I was able to apply what I learned successfully. Lots of people have told me my posts on this subject really helped them, so I must be doing something right.

I know as time goes on, my faith will strengthen, and the part of my mind fighting it, will continue to wither away. I will aim for bigger and bolder things and will deal with the limiting beliefs as they surface.

Everything I write here is based on my own understanding and how I have applied what I have learned in my own life. It is certainly not the end-all-be-all on the particular topic at hand.

My manifestations have been amazing, and I definitely still have my ‘stuff’ for sure; there are things I am still learning. So, in your own life, don’t get discouraged and think you can’t create awesomeness because you haven’t mastered LOA or there are still things you don’t understand. As you begin manifesting more and more, your confidence will grow, you’ll feel better, and things will keep moving along quite nicely.

So, onto the questions….

How important is it to release negative/limiting beliefs in manifestation? Melody and Abraham Hicks seem to have differing opinions on this, Melody talks about the universe as E-Bay, and how our beliefs are like the search filters, if we don’t change them, we won’t ever get the search results we like.

However, Abraham had said that beliefs are just thoughts we keep thinking, so if we just think something else, they will be deactivated and there’s no need to dig deep into our childhood traumas and whatnot, because the only thing that matters/exists is our vibration now. I was wondering what you opinion is on this?

Essentially, our beliefs will determine the experiences that come into our lives, and in order to let all the awesome stuff in, we have to believe it is possible for us. If we hold a belief that something isn’t possible, it can’t ever come to us; we won’t allow it in.

So, you’ll need a bit of background here….

First off, ’Melody’ refers to Melody Fletcher, the most awesome LOA teacher out there, hands down. Like seriously..she is amazing. The whole E-Bay thing was an amazing post she wrote comparing our manifestations and limiting beliefs to shopping for something on E-Bay. Essentially, the beliefs are the filters, which will determine the ‘search results’ which are all the different manifestations that are possible for us.

So, some may take this to mean we must figure out all our limiting beliefs we hold deep inside lest we will never get what we want. We need to shine the light on them, bring them to the surface and kick their sorry asses to the curb.

But, then according to Abraham Hicks, our beliefs are thoughts we keep on thinking, and when we change our thoughts, these crappy beliefs go away and are replaced by new ones. No need to dig around for anything. We just have to focus on all the crap actively running through our heads, all that negative self-talk that tells us we can’t have what we want.

So, will we forever be doomed if we can’t identify every limiting belief we hold? NO, no you will not.

Will our efforts forever be sabotaged because of things buried so deep in our subconscious it is basically impossible to access them? No, no they will not.

Here is my take on the subject.

First, I don’t think Melody was trying to say we need to dig super deep and identify every limiting belief we hold inside; in fact, in other blog posts I distinctly remember her saying that this was not necessary.

The way I see it, I don’t know if ‘regular people’ would really be capable of doing that and becoming fully self-actualized. Unless, of course, they wanted to totally detach from the world, live in a cave, and meditate 18 hours a day. There are some people like that out there– you know those spiritual masters you hear about who have been known to manifest things right out of thin air.

So, unless that level of manifestation is your ultimate goal, you will probably be able to create a pretty amazing life, and get all the things you want ,while still maintaining some sort of belief system that may not be 100 percent squeaky clean. Chances are, most of the beliefs you hold are perfectly fine and have been serving you pretty well.

This idea of limiting beliefs buried deep within obviously deals with the ‘unknown’ and when it comes to the ‘unknown’ we tend to go to a ‘bad place’ mentally. We view it with a lot of fear, and assume everything lurking there is bad, and waiting to mess things up for us. We imagine all these limiting beliefs hanging around, having a good laugh at our expense, and sabotaging our happiness at every turn.

Sure, there is some stuff down there that you may never fully uncover. But, chances are, lots of these beliefs are not anything so big they will majorly screw with your life; and if they are, they will eventually come to the surface as you get more advanced in your LOA work and reach for bolder things.

So long as we can get some insights into what might be standing in the way of things we are actively ‘working’ to attract, we are pretty good for now. So long as we are feeling good more than we are feeling badly, so long as our ‘new’ beliefs gain traction and we feel their truth more than any ‘old’ ones that may be lingering, we will see results.

In my own experience, the limiting beliefs standing in the way of the things I wanted personally were pretty obvious, and like Abraham-Hicks said, if we work on shifting our thoughts and feelings, we can cultivate better beliefs that support our work with LOA, and improve our lives. These old beliefs will fall away.

I think for most of us, it is these ‘obvious’ beliefs that are standing in the way. Some examples include ‘life is meant to mostly suck with some good stuff peppered in occasionally’, ‘success can only come with hard work and struggle’, feeling we are only capable of making a certain amount of money and working certain types of jobs, thinking we can’t have a good relationship because all the previous ones have been bad, rich people are a-holes, and all the ones that stem from just generally having a limited view of ourselves based on our past experience, and other people’s opinions about us.

The ones that were not so obvious, usually were not that far down. They were easily revealed to me when I would examine what may have led to certain ‘bad’ manifestations or during visualizations.

These are two great ways to discover things of which you may not fully be aware. When something happens that is ‘unwanted’ ask yourself how it makes you feel. Examining this will help you identify any beliefs you may hold that contributed to that outcome.

I remember awhile back, I applied for a high-volume long-term freelance writing job that paid really well and was all health content. That is one of my ultimate assignments. I applied, sent in some samples but I guess I wasn’t a good fit. When I asked myself how that made me feel, the first thing that came to mind was ‘it is difficult to find clients offering high-volume, long-term work exclusively in the niches I like.

This was not a belief that was top-of-mind, and I thought over and over again. But it was now obvious it was one I was holding when I dug a bit deeper.

Visualizing is a great tool to uncover limiting beliefs, as well as help shift them and get you in a good feeling space about whatever it is you want.

For many people, visualizing is uncomfortable because it activates resistance—all the crappy beliefs that tell you what you want is not possible. A lot of people kind of panic about this because we have been led to believe visualizing is manifesting and it’s not. It is just one of the many tools to get you in a good feeling space—feeling is what attracts. But, this discomfort is a good thing because it shows you where your blocks are. If you let yourself sit with it, you can get some amazing insights.

Visualizing can be a very powerful way to get into a good feeling space, so it is worth it to try and make it work for you. Play around with visualizations until you can get a picture that does make you feel good. This may mean being more general with the visualization and not adding in so many specific details, which often brings up the bad feelings. But, again, it is not necessary.

The fact that I really buy into LOA has been a major catalyst in letting certain beliefs go without me really addressing them specifically. They just don’t have as much power.I feel good more of the time, and as we know, feeling good is where it’s at.

As my belief in LOA strengthens, the ‘bad’ beliefs I have naturally become weaker as the ‘good’ beliefs get easier and easier to feel.Better feeling thoughts are easier to think. Remember thoughts are manifestations and are indicative of where we are vibing in that moment.

The more you can feel better, the more ‘happy’ thoughts you will have automatically without trying to will yourself into thinking them. The good thoughts have to come because that is the only thing you can attract when you are feeling good. And like Abraham said, consistently feeling good will naturally bring us what we want, and shift our beliefs automatically.

Remember, it is about predominant vibration. You don’t have to feel 100 percent good every second to get results. I manifested lots of awesome things while experiencing some moments of extremely low vibes.

You may not feel good every second, that’s okay; you still have some beliefs getting in the way. You can still get what you want, it will just take a bit longer to get there. It’s okay though. There is a lot of momentum behind the ‘old’ beliefs and thoughts. It can take some time to work through that. To just totally buy into all this on the deepest levels of your being automatically would be quite the feat.

And now for question number two…

I know that there are more obstacles when we increase our momentum, because when we’re going 100 miles/hour and we hit a tree, it will hurt more than going 5 miles/hour.

However, when we are focused on the unwanted, aren’t there a bunch of crap happening as well? So how do we differentiate between the “good” obstacles, the ones that are indicative of forward moving momentum, from the ones that stem from negative momentum?

There is no difference between ‘good’ obstacles and the ‘bad’ obstacles. Everything happening to us is based on our vibration at the moment, which is the sum of all our beliefs.

It took me awhile to realize this, but we are always moving towards what we want; everything that happens is meant to help us get there in some way. Even the ‘bad’ things. There doesn’t have to be any obstacles, but most of us will probably run into some.

As we get deeper into our work, more ‘issues’ will rise to the surface that need to be worked through. There are certain beliefs of which we may not be fully aware that need to be brought to our attention to allow a specific manifestation in.

Without these ‘obstacles’ popping up into our experience, we would have no way of knowing where we stand in the moment.

Having an ‘unwanted’ experience does not mean you have strayed from the path, or what you want isn’t possible. It simply showed up because it was a match to something you were feeling. It is there to help you figure out what needs to be tweaked.

Like I mentioned earlier, when something like this happens, examining the feelings it evoked will help us understand why we experienced what we did, and allows us to do whatever we need to do to work though that belief and correct course.

And sometimes, things we perceive as ‘bad’ are actually anything but, and happened because they will get us on the fast-track to getting whatever it is we want. If you don’t like your job, you may have visions of shifting your energy to line up with a ‘nicer’ version of your boss, or being picked as the replacement for your co-worker who, rumor has it, is planning to leave the company.

Then out of nowhere you get laid off. Most of us would see losing our job as a ‘bad’ manifestation; your desire for a better work experience did not involve actually leaving your current company. Like most of us, you were trying to figure out the ‘how’ and had a handful of experiences you believed would be the catalyst.

But, it was a really good thing because this situation will help you move towards an even better version of what you thought would make you happy, a version that might not have even entered your mind because of a limited view of what you thought was possible for your professionally.

Now that you have been fired, you were pushed into a space of really considering other options and thinking about what you really wanted. You now have a great opportunity to find a job you really, really like.

So, the obstacles you face are your friends. They are there to help you figure out where you still have blocks; they help you refine exactly what it is you want. While we may not feel good in the moment they are popping up, they serve a positive purpose.

You can always get what you want; you are always moving towards it. Don’t let the obstacles discourage you…they are not ‘punishments’ from the Universe; it is not putting them there to teach you any sort of ‘lesson’ in that negative way we typically think of this sentiment.

So, I hope I helped clear up some of the confusion around these LOA issues. I would love to hear from my fellow LOA enthusiasts.

Are you struggling anywhere? What awesome things have you manifested and how did you do it? What tips would you give to your fellow manifestors to get through the mental blocks? Please leave a comment..would love to chat with you.

Law of Attraction: Reader Questions about Limiting Beliefs and ‘ Obstacles’

  1. I am a firm believer of LOA. It has brought prosperity and happiness in my life.

Visualization has helped me use the LOA to acheive things that I have never dreamed of. I have never ever thought that I would run a company. But I visualized myself flying in a private jet and that led to remove my invisible fences.

I took my first step by registering a company. It was hell of a process to find employees, hire an accountant and finally understand finance and taxation policies (God I hate math) but I did learn a lot in the whole process. I wouldn’t have dared to take my first step if I haven’t visualized myself.

These days, I visualize myself living a life on passive income by writing books. It motivates me to write when even I am not in the mood. LOA magically boosts my willpower.

Wow ! It’s a coincidence because I have used the same example of one losing a job in my book, “Be The Genius You Were Born To Be”. The example was stated under a chapter called, “The Universe Has A Reason For Everything”.

It’s always a pleasure reading your posts Kelli. Never stop writing.

    1. Hi Harsh
Thanks for stopping by. So glad you liked the post. Thank you for sharing your experiences with using LOA–it sounds like you have managed to do some pretty amazing things. And, you are right, that knowingness we can get whatever it is we want can certainly serve as great motivation to take the necessary actions–can’t make money from a book if you never write it! Losing a job has been one of the biggest catalysts for many people I have talked to who made really big changes in their life. Voluntarily walking away from a paycheck and ‘security’ can be tough and being forced into it is often the trigger needed.
      Good luck with the book!

  2. Hi there! I’m a lurker who would like some help! Melody wrote an article on overcoming laziness but I can’t tell what the difference is between true laziness and being “inactive” with an intention to feel good. For example, I wanted to lose weight and I took action to go to the gym. But everytime I went, something bad happens. Both were so severe that in those times, not only did I end up injuring myself by falling off the treadmill, but I almost got into a car accident when I left the gym. So I decided not to go to the gym anymore. But now I feel like I’m being lazy. Could you please help me out?

  3. Hi Kelli,

Handled brilliantly. We ARE always moving toward what we want. It’s a continual unfolding of growth, progression and advancement. Our lower self knows regression; our higher self knows advancement, and nothing else, so trust your higher self and you’ll enjoy the journey so much more.

Each moment is a vehicle for our advancement. We’re here to grow. I personally know that as we’ve grown together we’ve learned to take adversity in stride, and we don’t turn around, because we’re learning and growing through it all.

Bad things don’t happen. All is. That’s it. Let go limiting beliefs about bad stuff, and see stuff for what it is, and you’ll learn neat lessons about you when resistance pops up in your life.

    Brilliant answers here KC.

    Tweeting now.

    Ryan

    1. Hi Ryan
Thanks so much. You bring up an excellent point about our higher selves–they know what is going on and if we can develop a bit of trust, they will bring us to our best lives. When I keep this fact in mind that we are always moving towards what we want, and the obstacles are there to help us know what needs to be tweaked, it changes our perspective for the better.

  4. I’m a big Melody Fletcher fan as well as an Abe fan and your blog entries have been a great way for me to go over what they say with a different perspective (yours). You always help me remind myself of things I forget after being exposed to them by Mel and Abe. Also, you live a life I used to dream about so I get to live it vicariously through you! Anyway, this post was one of your best! I really love your writing. Keep it up, and keep inspiring the rest of us who haven’t quite gotten all of LOA but are trying.

    1. Hey Selene
Thanks so much for your comment. So glad you liked the post. The principles of LOA are pretty basic and simple, as are the ingredients of being a happier person in general. The great thing about these topics is the unique blend of each person’s journey, perspective, insight, experiences, writing style, etc…makes for a great mix of resources for people where something new can always be learned or a new perspective formulated. I aspire to understand this stuff as well as Melody…she is truly a genius! I’m still learning too!

  5. I actually agree with both of them and your summary. Some of my desires have not transpired and it is because my “search boxes” are empty. The problem is I don’t know what I want to put into those search boxes so I am going digging around and found a few limiting beliefs that I did not realize existed. I am now working on them and through doing that, can do exactly as Abraham says.

I also think to a big degree, how you approach it is how intense the limiting belief is. For example, I really want to attract love into my life, but could not even watch love films because they reminded me of my failed marriage. Yesterday, for the first time in god knows how many years, I watched a love film with no expectations of my reaction. I said to myself, if it makes me miserable then so be it. If it makes me happy, then good stuff all round.

The result was at the end, I was screaming at the television, telling the male actor just to kiss her! It felt good and instantly I have felt a shift in my vibrations.

    1. Hey Natalie
Thanks for stopping by. I agree with what you said….the limiting beliefs we have can sometimes be really obvious and sometimes they are more buried. But, like I said in the post, the ‘buried’ ones are usually not that deep and we have a pretty good idea of them as we examine what is going on in our lives and give it a bit of thought. And once we bring them to the surface our efforts at feeling good and simply knowing these beliefs are not any sort of truth can be very effective in shifting them.

I think you make a good point about approaches indicating intensity. There are certain issues that are certainly more charged than others-relationships can be a big one because it is such an emotional aspect of our lives. That is great you had that experience. You are right..that one moment likely created a big shift and you are now a few more rungs up the ladder and it will just keep getting better from there.

  6. Hi Kelli! Thank you for this post. I am new to the LOA and I am 18 years old. I currently live with my parents and my family has struggled with money probably since I was born. I find myself getting angry at times because (I am currently attempting to manifest my first job and car btw) of how I’m always being told “we can’t because I don’t have the money” or “I’m just doing the best I can.” Um NO. I don’t really believe it’s the best they or anyone can do, but they don’t believe in the LOA.

I am a little while away from moving out and my biggest fear is not breaking the cycle of struggle and a life that is unfulfilling. Secondly, how can I enjoy my last year of high school when I’m constantly relying on my mom for rides (who is always complaining about how much she hates her car and how she can’t afford a new one) and money (that means prom, homecoming, fun things, my cell phone, etc) ? I am trying to manifest my own car, money, etc but how can I feel those feelings of freedom and manifest things that represent freedom to me when I’m SO restricted at the moment?

    1. Hey Marisa
Thanks for stopping by. Wow..if I had only gotten into LOA at 18, my life would have taken quite the different path for sure! That you are aware of this concept at this point in your life bodes very well for you! I know what it is like to share a space with people who are at very different levels energetically and do not buy into a concept such as this. It can be tough to maintain a higher vibration, especially if we are still in the beginning stages of transitioning to this way of thinking.

I do agree with you that they are probably not doing the best they can. I came across a quote recently that noted when people say that, it means they are doing what is comfortable and nothing more. That really resonated with me.

The fact that you are aware of LOA means without a doubt you will break this cycle–it can only perpetuate if you maintain beliefs and take actions that support it. Naturally, right now, there is a gap between that intellectual understanding of LOA and feeling like you ‘get it’ and really feeling this truth on an emotional level.

Know that how your parents can’t affect your reality and they can’t influence how things will turn out for you. Their vibration can only affect you as much as you let it. They can’t bust into ‘your’ reality and override what you are doing.

The only way you can feel better now is finding a different perspective on the situation, and that can be really hard sometimes. Believe me I have been there in the past and still deal with that sometimes! For example, develop an appreciation that you have your mom there to give you the rides–it may not be ideal but better than having no way to get around and not being able to go anywhere at all. While it isn’t ideal to rely on your mom for money and not have as much as you want, feel grateful she is providing it to you to the degree she is able or willing.

Everything is being created in this immediate moment, so we need to find a way to feel better now–we can’t wait until our stuff gets here. The good news is, you don’t have to feel good every second to get things moving in the right direction. So, don’t panic when you have a bad day or find yourself having worrisome thoughts. Just do your best to shift your mood as best you can. Make sure you find time to do things that make you feel good.

I could write a whole book here, but will stop now. Feel free to email me anytime..would be happy to help you!

      1. Hi Marisa – When I read your comment that you didn’t think your parents were doing the best they could, I used to think the same thing, and it drove me crazy when I would hear people say they (or ANYONE who wasn’t acting in the highest good for that matter) were doing the best they could! There was no way my parents did the best they could, or even that I, most times, was doing the best I could, much less criminals, child abusers, etc.

In addition to LOA I have also been a big CWG (Conversations With God) fan and it was there that I finally “got” the concept that people are always doing the best they can. They’re doing the best they can GIVEN THEIR MODEL OF THE WORLD (meaning all their previous influences, experiences, beliefs, treatment by others, energy levels, fears, etc.) Here’s a quote that helped me:

“Let us understand, now fully at last, these two wisdoms from Conversations with God:

“1. No one does anything inappropriate, given their model of the world.

“2. Everyone is doing the best they can at every moment.

“I was moved to tears the other day while reading a book written by Byron Katie. In it, she was describing a life experience that she had, when a man approached her with a gun in his hand. Sticking it into her belly, he said, ‘I’m going to have to kill you.’ Katie looked at the person and said she wished he wouldn’t do that. He answered that he had no choice. Then Katie said quietly: ‘In that case, thank you for doing the best you can.’ The man stared at her for a moment, then shook his head, stowed his gun, and walked away.”

Anyway, I just wanted to throw that out there.

BTW, Byron Katie’s book Loving What Is, CWG and LOA have been the 3 biggest positive influences on my life and I recommend all 3 if you get a chance to read one or more of them.

I hereby add my own desire to yours for the universe to grant your requests to it with ultimate speed!

  7. Hey Kelli,

I’ve heard so many different takes on this and like you said here, they all mean well with how they are presenting it but at times I find this whole process even more confusing.

This is what I know for sure.

When I know with everything that I am and that I have that something is going to happen for me it does. There are no thoughts about it lingering in my subconscious or if there are I’m definitely not aware of them. I’m not holding on to any I’m not good enough or I don’t deserve it crap. I know what I know what I know and I don’t know how I know it but I just do.

I’m not a visual person so when they tell me you have to visualize how you want your life to be in order for it to happen, if that’s the case then I’m just screwed. I seriously believe though that when you know it in your bones that whatever it is that you want will happen and NEVER waver from those thoughts, it eventually will come into existence.

This is another reason I don’t really write about LOA either. Like you I’m not a teacher, I’ve heard it all, I’m still confused about a lot of it but I just know what’s worked for me and there is no denying it. How you might ask? I don’t have a frickin clue, it just did because of my strong beliefs. I’ve always been this way though with my thinking but the more I learn the more confused I became.

Patience is the key though because sometimes it took up to a year for what I knew would happen but I just remained in faith and never wavered from those thoughts.

Thanks for sharing your experience and I’m not familiar with Melody but I am with Abraham. I’ve heard of her but not studied any of her teachings.

I always like to hear though how others are doing and how they’ve achieved certain things because I think this is yet another one of those things that it’s not a one size fits all type of shoe. What works for me might not for someone else. I guess time will only tell on that one.

    ~Adrienne

    1. Hi Adrienne

So happy to see you here again, and loved reading your insightful comment and hearing all about your own experience.
It seems you are really aligned with what you want…it sounds like you don’t have any of the common blocks that keep certain experiences from coming into people’s lives. I have discovered that is really what it is. Once my belief system shifted, thing just changed dramatically with very little specific action on my part.

Like you, I am not one for visualization. I think that can stress people out because we are always told to do that, but it is really more about the feeling and knowing, like you said. Visualizing is just one of many tools and a good one if it makes us feel good; if not, it is not good to force it.

It sounds like you have a really strong belief system, and your feelings are in alignment with what you want, and I have discovered that is the key to making it work. It really is that simple..what complicates it is our minds and the more limiting beliefs we have acquired over the years. But, if those beliefs aren’t there to begin with, what we want will come very easily. Like you, I don’t have a clue but it seems to work, so I just go with it, and I never hesitate to discuss it with people.

Melody is great..if you ever feel so inclined to learn more about LOA, her blog is the best resource out there in my opinion. Like you, I too am interested in learning more about people’s journeys, tools, philosophies, etc.. because there are many different paths to success and we can learn a lot from others.

I am glad I got to learn more about you and your take on things..it was very interesting.
