My experience since applying the teachings of the law of attraction has shown me focusing on what we want, and not what we don’t, will ensure we get the former in all its glory. But when the stakes are high, and we are feeling drawn towards changes that would really change our lives big-time, we’re probably going to grapple with this quite a bit–even if we are a bit more LOA-savvy, and have banked lots of manifesting successes.
The idea of leaving your marriage after 20 years, giving up your long-held career to start an online business from scratch when you don’t know jack about it or, quitting your job to travel the world for a year, not having any idea what you would do when you got back, is understandably scary.
We often have a hard time trusting in this process, our feelings, and intuition, for even the smallest of manifestations and choices. So naturally these bolder moves are going to trigger a crap load of resistance, and no matter how ‘right’ a decision may feel, your mind is going to throw in its two cents every chance it gets.
So if your inner work has led you to realizing you want and need things to change in a big way, and it’s causing all sorts of discomfort, here are a few things I would like to say about that:
Nothing is Ever Wasted
We are very conditioned to think we need to plan our whole life out, get on a path and stick with that until our dying day. We don’t like discomfort and uncertainty, and we want to feel like we have figured it all out, so we don’t have to worry about anything anymore.
But, we are constantly growing and evolving, and while that doesn’t necessarily mean redesigning our entire life every few years, it does mean that what we want at one point may not be the same thing we want at another. It means that our values may change; our priorities may shift. It means that things that once worked for us and served us, may not continue to do so as time goes on.
This reluctance to change and grow can really put a damper on our life experience. When we resist it, it is painful as hell. That is why not having what we want hurts so damn much…those desires have been born, and when we don’t try to realize them, energy stagnates.
We are meant to create and when we are not honoring this purpose, things can get ugly. Frustration begins to grow, and it morphs into all sorts of nastier feelings like resentment, feeling trapped, powerlessness and hopelessness.
Things aren’t meant to stay the same. If someone happens to figure out exactly what she wants early on in life, and totally hit the nail on the head, and everything is great, awesome. But that isn’t the case for most of us.
And that’s fine. You didn’t do anything wrong. You didn’t make a mistake. Everything that has happened up until this point has served you in various ways, and probably produced a variety of good experiences.
It is crucial to understand that nothing is ever wasted. If you decide not to pursue the career you prepared for with that horrendously expensive master’s degree, getting that degree wasn’t a waste of time. If you realize your marriage was over years ago, and you were never right for each other anyway, walking away doesn’t mean all those years were wasted.
Yes, we are human and not totally enlightened beings,so naturally we may not fully adopt this perspective; and we can beat ourselves up for not having made changes sooner, bowing to pressure to do things we may have never wanted to do in the first place, being afraid to follow our hearts, yada, yada, yada.
Let yourself feel all that…it’s fine. But it is so important to remember none of it was a waste. Think of all you learned about yourself and what you want out of life. Think of the positive things that may have come from these experiences.
Wherever you are now is right where you are supposed to be, and all the clarity you have gained will serve you very well moving forward, now that you are committed to creating your life experience more deliberately.
Don’t be afraid to shift gears; don’t be afraid to take that other path. Don’t feel like you have to keep doing things you don’t want to do because of all the time has been invested up until this point.
It’s Okay if You Are Not Ready to Act Yet
Because we are so oriented towards action, and believe it is action that determines our results, there may be that pressure to start doing stuff. After all, getting what we want in life means grabbing the bull by the horns, and charging forward boldly.
And this is kind of true, but most of the time, people are doing this from a really screwy space energetically, and that is where are the suffering, frequent obstacles and things seeming really hard, come in.
If you’re freaking out about making these big changes, and are really scared, acting now isn’t the best move.
You have to remember that our actions are a manifestation of our energy, and the actions we take, are indicative of our vibration. If you are taking actions from a place of anything but feeling really aligned with your desired outcome, you will be traveling a more difficult path than necessary.
And when I say ‘really aligned’ I am not necessarily talking about the complete absence of any doubt, fear or uncertainty. Anytime we do anything new, we’ll probably feel that, no matter how excited we are to take that step, no matter how right it feels.
So if you’re in this boat, but holding back because you’re not one million percent on board, you may want to reconsider your position, and make some kind of move. You want to look at what kind of resistance you are dealing with that is keeping you stuck.
Went off on a bit of a tangent there, but thought that was important to point out.
Anyway, back to my original point…it’s okay to not do anything yet. You don’t want to do anything yet if you still have a large amount of resistance. Acting from this space will lead to all sorts of manifestations that will just compound the freaking out.
Things won’t go as smoothly as they can. You won’t be as aligned with the ideas, inspirations, encounters and opportunities that will help move things along.
The things you fear will happen, the things you don’t want to happen, will be more likely to happen because you at this point, you are more aligned with those sorts of manifestations.
Remember our world is created from the inside out, and getting things right in the realm of your thoughts, feelings and beliefs, takes massive priority over any sort of action you believe is necessary for manifesting whatever it is you want, and making the changes you want to make.
And this is particularly true when it comes to making really big changes that would basically change the whole fabric of your life. The more resistance you have, the more important it is to change your energy before you proceed.
Nothing needs to change for you to start feeling better; the things you don’t like in your life now taking a hike is not a necessary requirement to start believing what you want instead is possible.
You can start feeling better now; you must start feeling better now. You can believe what you want is possible without seeing any ‘proof’ yet; believing before seeing is a non-negotiable in the deliberate creation process.
You don’t have to yet do anything to start aligning with what you want, and creating the life you want.
Action is the last step, not the first. We often get that backwards and it really ‘fucks up our shit’ if you will.
Now, if you end up acting before being aligned, things can still work out for you. So if you have taken actions that you now believe you should have waited for, you didn’t screw things up. You didn’t mess up your chances for getting what you want.
That can’t happen…you can always get what you want. We just sometimes make that path harder than it needs to be, and it just is what it is.
But no matter what, things can work out the way you want them to, so don’t beat yourself up in this process if you believe you made a ‘wrong’ move. It can be rectified through consciously working with your energy.
Examining Resistance and Feelings, and Building that Positive Momentum is Absolutely Crucial
Yeah, that is important all the time. But in many instances, we are able to align ourselves pretty nicely with something we want without having to dig that deeply. The resistance shifts naturally as we manifest all sorts of things that ‘prove’ there is something to the law of attraction.
We may have our blocks and what not, but overall, we do truly believe we can get what we want, and things unfold accordingly.
But when you are feeling inspired to do things that really and truly scare the crap out of you, that have huge implications for how your life will unfold moving forward, that ‘inner’ work becomes absolutely crucial.
The reason I am bringing up this point, and stressing it so much, is because I know it is going to be really uncomfortable and you’re not going to want to do it. And again, it is so important when it comes to this type of situation.
You have to really dive into why you are so unhappy with how things are now. This may suck a bit as you are going to have to let yourself really feel your feelings. But if you want to gain the confidence you need to move forward, you have to understand the depths of your unhappiness and dissatisfaction with your life as it is now.
It will make you even more certain what you want instead is the better option, no matter how scary going after it may seem. This deeper examination will get your mind on board more with the path you want to take, and the things you want to manifest. It will be like…yeah, this really isn’t working and we need to do something about it…something needs to change. I’m in.
You have to really examine the resistance you have around what you are feeling inspired to do. What scares you about making this change? What do you fear will happen? What doubts do you have about getting what you want? What do you fear leaving behind? What negative associations do you have around getting the thing you actually want?
The type of resistance you are experiencing when it comes to these high-stakes changes is unlikely to just fade away on its own by simply focusing positively. That will certainly help, but looking at it specifically is almost always necessary to really chip away at it because it’s so big and so deep.
Building the momentum behind the energy that makes you a match to what you want, and will allow things to unfold in the smoothest way possible, is so important when we are talking about these really big changes.
The more you can feel good about what you want, that things will work out for you, that what you want is truly possible, that any issues will resolve themselves smoothly and without drama, the easier it will be for you to proceed.
The more you build that momentum, the more things you will manifest that will open up the path to you, without you having had to figure anything out, or take any sort of action.
The more positive energy you have behind your desire, the less you will task yourself with having to figure everything out, and trying to see 50 steps ahead.
Your inner knowing that things will work out will strengthen. It will sink in more deeply that the attraction process works the same no matter the manifestation, no matter how big or small the thing is you want.
Again, this won’t be comfortable but it’s the quickest path to getting what you want and things working out the way you want them to.
In Closing…
It’s okay to be really scared. It’s not a sign that you are going after the wrong thing, or that you actually don’t want to let go of whatever it is you are looking to release now.
It’s called being human. We can’t predict the future, and naturally, the bigger the change, the more our inability to do this, pulls at us.
But no matter what it is you want, know that things can work out for you. Things may not all fall into place immediately; you may not totally rid yourself of your fear. But that is just par for the manifesting course.
Start within and things will unfold nicely from there as you align more and more with what you want. Your confidence you are making the right choice will grow; you’ll start feeling more excited than scared. You’ll take things as they come, always knowing you are on the right track no matter what.
Your Turn…
What did you think of this post? Are you currently contemplating a big change? How is it going? Have you come out the other side of such a change and if so, any advice to offer? Looking forward to your comments as always.

I like reading your posts because you are one of the only loa writers/bloggers that I’ve come across that will go into the nitty-gritty. Most of the articles I’ve read gloss over the scary REAL feelings we have; they use terms like resistance and the like, but pretty much make you (me anyway) feel like if you think or do anything negative you’re going to “fuck up all your shit”. But you are all like “yeah, you’re probably going to come across some of these things, and that’s totally normal, its still going to be okay, here are some ways you can work with and around that. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you and I really appreciate your realistic/honest approach to all of this.
Hi Summer
Thanks so much for your comment and I am so glad my content is resonating with you…that is key to really absorbing information that will be helpful for us. I think it is important to acknowledge all of that because without honoring where we truly are, we really can’t significantly shift into a better emotional state, and it will be really hard to reach those vibrations that are really far from us right now…in theory we can just decide we’ll be happy and not worry or whatever, but practically speaking, that’s a tall order. It is important we do our best to change our focus and realize the shifts aren’t inherently difficult, but we do have that stronger resistance sometimes and we can’t just pretend it’s not there. Facing it and letting ourselves feel it is the fastest way to really break it down.
What a timely post as in a couple of weeks, I will be leaving my job and working part time at another company so I can start building my fitness career. I’ve been at this job since Sept. 2006! It’s crazy to think I’ve been here this long. I liked this job at first, but I have REALLY outgrown it since I’ve learned about living deliberately. I’ve been nervous about this massive change, but I’m really excited! I am almost finished with my personal training certification (should be finished by the first of October) and on Sept. 19, I’ll receive my first group fitness certification. This will be a HUGE change from the data entry position I’ve had for almost 10 years. The nervousness is definitely there, but the excitement overshadows it. I think when you’re in alignment, you KNOW it. You’re nervous, but you KNOW it’s the right move. 🙂
Hey Summer
Wow…big things happening and that all sounds so exciting. That nervousness is certainly understandable and good for you for deciding to make those moves, even when it still didn’t feel totally comfortable…I don’t know if we ever get totally comfortable with these big decisions. But getting comfortable with the discomfort makes us unstoppable. I totally agree that you can definitely tell when you know it’s the right move even if there is still some resistance around it, and if the time feels right, it is good to act in that moment. Good luck and I can’t wait to hear about how things are going
Lovely post. I’ll keep it simple and just say THANK YOU. 🙂
You are very welcome my love!
Love this. Nothing is ever wasted. Powerful stuff because I’ve seen this truth in my own life. From studying meteorology, to working in an office, to being a pier guard, I’ve used my skills from each stage of my life AND my overall experiences to free myself today. Everything works like a nice, tidy puzzle….when you see it that way 😉

Hi Ryan
Your career path really is a great example. Like you said, it all provided you with something that you used moving forward to apply in the next phase. It really is like a puzzle…great comparison.
I have had a couple of major life changes over the past year and a half, and yes they can be very painful. I realise now that both are helping me go in the right direction for achieving my goals. The first was a break from my long term boyfriend, and buying my own flat which was in itself massive. The second was a relatively minor stroke just a month after moving. The second forced the carrer change I had been working towards for some time, and being on my own gives me the time and space I need. I agree that nothing is wasted. I see my long term relationship as helping me to grow, and the stroke as a way of showing me how strong I am.
Hi Kathy
Thanks for your comment and thank you for sharing your experience. It really is amazing to see the opportunities these challenging times present and how they can help us move forward and step more into who we really are and what we really want. You certainly sound like you have an amazing perspective and I am sure all of this really kicked your manifesting into overdrive!
