Right now I’m feeling passionless, purposeless, and bored out of my freaking mind. It’s been this way for almost a year and a half. Sometimes things come along that spark my interest or make me happy temporarily, but mostly I feel disinterested in life, like it has nothing to offer.
Things that used to make me happy, don’t any more. It’s not depression. I’m not UNhappy. But life seems stale and flat. There’s no passion in anything I do and I can’t figure out how to tap into my true passions or even try to begin finding them.
I know “neutral” isn’t a bad place to be, but I’ve been here forever and don’t want to make it a permanent home. Do you have any thoughts about how to shift out of a long vacay in Neutralsville?
The state described here can be an uncomfortable one, especially for the conscious creator. Once we get wind of the idea our energy creates our reality, being in any state less than shitting-rainbows-level-happiness can send us into a tizzy, feeding the deep fear that underlies all our ‘work’ with a teaching like the law of attraction–this fear being we aren’t going to get what we want, all the things we don’t like in our life will never leave, and we will remain miserable.
We may not be conscious this is the primary reason for resisting this state so much, but it is most likely the culprit.
I have experienced this state many times, and likely will again in the future, and for the most part I have become comfortable with it. I don’t like it but I don’t fight it as much.
Developing a new relationship with my negative feelings, fear, confusion and uncertainty has done more for my overall happiness than anything else.
So based on my own experience, this is the advice and insight I would offer if you are also experiencing this sort of ‘blah’ neutral zone. I can’t give you a step-by-step guide out of it because well, there isn’t one. Why you may be here, the purpose it is serving, and the way ‘out’ is subject to a host of individual factors.
I know our action-oriented minds love nothing more than an action-oriented solution, but things operate a bit differently in the world of energy.
What Are You Resisting?
I have always found when I am in periods where I feel really stuck or restless, I’m not feeling inspired to do much, nothing seems to make me feel happy, etc…I am usually resisting something big time.
And I don’t mean resistance to something in my reality I don’t like and am fighting against, but resisting some sort of change in my life that seems scary or uncomfortable.
I am holding onto something that I know I need to let go of. I am doing something I really don’t want to be doing, but maybe am having a hard time admitting I don’t want to do it.
Something isn’t working for me, but I keep engaging anyway, for one reason or another, whether it be fear or because I feel it is something I ‘should’ be doing, I ‘have’ to do.
Holding onto things that need to be released, resisting change–it takes up a lot of energy, energy that can be put to better use. All the wonderful things we can manifest to help us get moving or get back on track can’t make their way in–the solutions to problems, the inspired actions, the insights, the new ideas, the clarity.
Once we allow ourselves to make these changes, once we let go of the things we need to let go of, our vibration gets a nice boost. We create some space for the things we want to show up. We feel lighter and freer, and this alone will make us feel a lot better, even if nothing ‘new’ has shown up yet.
So if you are in this state in particular, is it possible you are resisting a change, resisting a decision that is long overdue?
Are You Truly Feeling Neutral?
Sometimes our ‘neutral’ state is anything but. We have some stronger emotion brewing under the surface but we may be really disconnected from it, and might not realize it’s there (on some level we always know.)
If we have been feeling this way for a longer period–awesome-question-asker noted a pretty long period–there is a better chance this is the case.
Now this unacknowledged emotion isn’t necessarily super-intense. It doesn’t automatically mean you must be full-on depressed or suppressing a volcano of rage.
But there might be something there to some degree. Only we can know the depth of it. Only we can know if our ‘neutral’ state is truly neutral or if there is something underneath the surface we aren’t looking at.
We have an intense resistance to our negative feelings, and we have become very good at pushing them down so we don’t have to deal with them.
This resistance to these feelings is what spurs our interest in personal growth in the first place–we hope to find a way to get rid of them so we can just be happy all the time.
We become interested in the law of attraction in particular because if we can just figure out how to ‘use’ it to get the things we feel so unhappy without, we won’t have to deal with the feelings. Our mind makes an excellent case as to why its absence is the cause of our unhappiness, so naturally getting it is the solution.
As a fellow human, I get it. But as many of you have probably seen, this plan of total elimination of negative emotion doesn’t seem to be working too well, much to our dismay.
While we can dramatically alter how often and how intensely we experience negative emotion, significantly transform our relationship to it and how we handle it, and even completely change how we respond to certain situations in our life, ridding ourselves of these feelings completely probably still eludes you, and will likely, always.
On an intellectual level, most of us likely understand this goal may seem a bit unrealistic; on an intellectual level, we understand the value of our negative feelings and know they are normal.
But how we feel is often very, very different, and this is the goal, this is what we desperately want. We deeply crave feeling positive emotion all the time, and our seeming inability to realize this creates a lot of tension within us.
Feeling badly isn’t the end of the world, it really isn’t. Admitting we are sad, angry, afraid, anxious, or whatever else, is fine. It’s freeing. If the feelings are there, they are there. No sense in avoiding dealing with them.
How exhausting is it to constantly fight them off? How much energy are you expending trying to be ‘positive’ when you are feeling anything but?
I know there is this fear of getting ‘stuck’ in these feelings if we really start acknowledging them, really start feeling them. But the exact opposite is true.
Admitting they are there, letting yourself feel them, is actually the key to feeling better more quickly, more genuinely, because this energy won’t be cluttering up your vibration anymore.
Think about how much better you feel after a good cry, or talking to someone about a problem you are having. You actually feel lighter don’t you? You are able to get into a better frame of mind about the issue–you feel more optimistic about things getting better, the problem getting solved.
Being more positive, reining in our negative thoughts and shifting them to something more positive, is absolutely necessary to manifesting what we want, and changing our lives. We can’t fight for our negativity; we can’t refuse to feel better until something changes.
But in order to do that with real consistency, in a meaningful way, it often requires us to deal with some not-so-positive thoughts and feelings that have been our default for a very long time.
This is a good example of how the theory of manifesting, and the reality of it, can look very different.
People often lament they are having a hard time being happier and thinking more positively, and this is why it is so hard–we aren’t used to feeling this way, thinking this way.
We may have a few moments here and there of feeling good, like when we are doing our morning affirmations for example, but then the rest of the day we are sending out completely contradictory energy.
Even just a few moments of purely positive energy can be really powerful, but that power diminishes if it is constantly being undermined.
And if we don’t deal with that contradictory energy–which is much stronger and has a lot more momentum behind it–it will continue to be the energy that dominates our physical reality.
This doesn’t mean constantly monitoring our thoughts and feelings, and trying to shift every negative one; it doesn’t mean spending hours a day trying to ‘raise’ your vibration.
What it does mean though, is we need to have an awareness about how we are really feeling, and be honest about it.
If we don’t do that, we won’t change our energy in any real way, and if our energy doesn’t change, our reality won’t either–it can’t. Our vibration can’t be defied.
So, it is important to ask yourself if you are truly feeling neutral or if something else might be going on. Only you have the answer.
Do Anything that Feels Good…Anything
I talk about general vibrational management a lot and the reason I do is because it is absolutely crucial to manifesting more ‘successfully,’ and I don’t think a lot of people realize this.
We make manifesting such an action-oriented process with all our tools and techniques, trying to change our energy around very particular subjects. This is usually part of the process since we have a lot of ‘stuff’ regarding these specifics, but not as big a part as we tend to think.
If we attract based on our energy, the more positive energy we generate, the more ‘positive’ things we will manifest.
No matter the specific things we want, the feelings we think we will feel from getting them tend to be same across the board. There is a common energetic thread.
So when we activate that energy in some way, it makes it more likely these things will show up because they are a match to that energy.
When we understand this, it becomes clearer why doing anything that makes us feel better, feel happier, is good for our manifesting ‘efforts.’ You get a better idea of why the activity or action having no relation to the specific things you may be wanting to manifest makes absolutely no difference.
This is why after deciding to take the day off, to go hiking in your favorite park, rather than do a bunch of stuff you don’t feel like doing for your business, you come home to find three new product sales.
This is why after going out to lunch with a good friend, instead of spending another stress-filled day poring over job sites and writing cover letters, you get an email from an old co-worker, letting you know about an opening in his new company that would be perfect for you.
And another obvious benefit is when we are doing these more general activities, we may not thinking so much about the ‘specific’ things. When our vibrational ‘work’ is always in relation to said specific thing, it can actually work against us because we are very focused on its absence, we feel a lot of pressure to ‘raise’ our vibration around the subject and everything we want becomes so ‘precious.’ None of that is good news.
This commitment to overall vibrational management, and doing what we can to enjoy life more–which is the whole point anyway–will also address another concern noted in the question–finding ‘purpose.’
We tend to tie purpose to ‘doing’ and any time not ‘doing’ our purpose is simply wasted time. Which just makes us feel even more pressure to figure it out and get on with it. Living our ‘purpose’ is supposed to make us feel all these incredible feelings, and we’re missing out.
Your ‘purpose’ is to be happy and that will look different for everyone. The things we enjoy most, the subjects that interest us most, the things we are really good at–all of these things can give us some insight into what sort of life will make us happiest, what sort of career we will find most fulfilling, the activities from which we will get the most pleasure.
Feeling like we are on ‘purpose’ will likely involve action in some form, doing things, but again, it’s really is about ‘being.’
When we are just feeling better overall, that energy lends itself to figuring all this out. In this higher vibration, where we are feeling better overall, feeling less stress and other ‘ick’, we manifest insights and clarity. We are in a better position to ‘hear’ our inner voice, to connect with ‘big’ us, who knows exactly what will make us happiest, what that next step is.
This higher vibration allows us to attract anything and anyone we need in our journey, any resource required to get us to where we want to be, to guide us towards our highest good and happiness.
This higher vibration gets us unstuck, it opens up energy. And even if it is smaller shifts at first, that’s fine. That is all you need to open yourself up to this divine assistance, to new possibilities your mind likely hasn’t even conceived of. That is all you need to get what you are truly after at the end of the day–to feel better.
So what are things now that you could do that you think would make you feel better, that you would enjoy? Don’t judge what comes to mind. Don’t dismiss anything because it seems silly. Don’t worry if it is at all related to specific things you want to manifest–again, it really doesn’t matter.
Just do it. Just follow those feelings, and see where it takes you. Trust you will start feeling better. Trust you will find the answers you are looking for. Trust you aren’t meant to stay in this state, to stay stuck. Without trust, none of this will ‘work.’
See what it is teaching you, the purpose it is serving. I know when we aren’t feeling great, we are really resistant to these hippy-dippy perspectives…I get it. But even with that, at the end of the day, I am always down for a perspective that can ease my suffering.
Embracing it doesn’t mean perpetuating it or resigning yourself to it. It just means accepting this is where you are right now, and it’s okay.

Love love love this. Describes exactly how I’ve been feeling lately and just what I needed. Im positive this will benefit anyone who in the same place. Thanks so much!
Hi Jan
Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed the post! Glad it was timely for you
Thank you for this. I received this post in my mailbox at just the right time. That in itself is my personal proof that I am on the right track. Thank you so very much.
Hi Wendy
Thanks so much for your comment and glad it was timely for you. Isn’t it great how we are supported in this journey? Always get what we need when we need it…just have to believe it works that way of course!
Hi Kelli!
Oh, yes! I definitely believe that things are always working out for me. Big hugs and loves to you. Excited to read what’s next!
Hi Kelli
Enjoyed this post also. It resonates so much with me. Am still feeling ‘stuck’ but also have made the effort to just go and take time to relax even if I think I should be ‘doing’ something. Often just doing stuff because you feel you have to is counterproductive. There is a feeling of guilt sometimes. You see I am still job hunting which is proving harder than I expected but I have been meditating more on what I want to manifest and imagining the feeling of what it will be like when it is manifested. That feels good. I also have taken more time to do activities where I can relax instead of feeling I have to always be job-hunting. That used to make me feel guilty but not any more. I now ‘get’ the importance of doing things that you enjoy and to relax. It helps to get you out of your own head. Thanks for your regular posts Kelli. I always enjoy them and they are always spot on. ! 🙂 Jane
Thanks Jane
Sounds like you are doing a great job of managing your vibe, and that guilt and worry we aren’t doing ‘enough’ happens to all of us–our lovely mind will always keep doing what it does. But as we hold steady with this way of doing things, it feels less intrusive, less charged, and we can more easily ignore it.
I love this Kelli, so helpful! I have learned to recognise that a feeling of “blah” or “nothingness” is a red flag for me that I haven’t been checking in with my emotions and am letting my emotional awareness practice slip. I’ve come to see it as a good thing because it is a signal for me to recalibrate, deal with what needs to be dealt with and make the shifts I have to make. There are so many articles out there for what to do if you feel a “negative” emotion but this is one of the first I’ve stumbled upon that deals with the “blah” – it’s so important and I think it will help a lot of people. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Rhiannon
Thanks so much for your comment and great insight. In my experience as well, I find those states usually mean I am a bit disconnected with what is happening. And you are so right…it is a good thing to be alerted to energies that may be throwing us out of alignment. It is a great thing when we can start seeing our negative feelings as helpful messengers rather than something that is just ‘getting in the way’ of our manifesting. We can’t align if we don’t know what’s stopping us!
Hi Kelli,
I always get something from your posts.
I’ve learned just to accept those feeling today.
Sometimes I’m not going to feel like doing anything and that’s okay.
I was just sharing with a friend and I explained to him that being happy is overrated. It’s up there with being right.
What have worked for me is when I’m not feeling motivated I think of things I’m grateful for. This always is followed with positive feeling. When I think about my grandkids I can feel my attitude about life changing next thing I know I’m up and at it.
Action and gratitude have always worked for me.
Thanks
Hi Vernon
Thanks so much for your comment and sharing your experience. I am so happy to hear my content is helpful for you consistently. Accepting our feelings and letting them ‘out’ is so incredibly helpful. If that energy remains, it will just continue to be the energy that dominates our reality…can’t be any other way. Gratitude can be a very powerful energy and when we truly feel it, like you saw, can create a quick turn around in our emotional state. And yes, don’t feel guilty about not doing anything…the Universe or whatever we call that ‘force’ doesn’t need our hard work, suffering, toil or effort to ‘create’ anything we are looking to manifest. It’s not like they are the ‘raw’ materials of the good things we seek.
I am also in a state of neutralism, and I feel so depressed sometimes that I just can’t keep up with the world, with my friends, family and the reality and worst part is I am getting addicted to it but now I am trying to get out of it but nothing works well. I’ve tried so much but in the end, I am still a depressed person with no passion or goal. please, can you guide me through this how can I live a better life?
Hi Marry
I can only offer so much in a blog post comment response to someone I haven’t spoken with personally. A couple of things jumped out at me: Nothing ‘works’ and ‘tried so much.’ It sounds like you have really been trying to accomplish this on the level of ‘action’ likely with various tools, techniques, coping mechanisms, etc…Not to say these things don’t have their place because they can certainly be helpful aids. But there will be limits to how much they can help if we aren’t doing the most important thing, which is really allowing ourselves to embrace and feel our feelings in a way we may not have been doing previously, which is with an intention to heal them, without judgment, resistance and criticism. Understandably, we are usually in a space of trying to get rid of them and make them ‘go away’ because they are unpleasant so we really don’t engage with them in a way that will actually help us heal them.
It is also important to have a true willingness to let them go, which would seem like an automatic since we don’t like feeling badly, but consciously wanting to transform energies doesn’t automatically translate to truly wanting to let them go since on some level we are being served by them in some way.
I offer private coaching so if you were looking for more personalized insight, that would really be the only way to get it since it would allow me to speak directly with you.
Good luck!
