When you first read about all of this law of attraction stuff, it sounds pretty sweet, does it not? Simply thinking about what we want, and feeling good about it, will actually bring these things into our reality. I know it really resonated with me when I first came across this concept. There was just something to it that felt really right..I knew there was truth to it.
Being I always had an interest in personal development , I was already in a frame of mind that was receptive to law of attraction. I was willing to give it a whirl and see how it worked out.
I no longer wanted to buy into alternative belief systems that were more pessimistic, and disempowering, particularly since my life sucked in various ways at the time, and I was really itching to turn things around.
I wanted to take control of my life; I wanted to believe it could be good, and that making it good didn’t have to be some Herculean effort mentally, emotionally and physically. And, having been applying the teachings I have learned over the last several of years, I now know this is possible.
But, this way of thinking is probably very different than how you have been thinking your whole life. And, even though things sound good, and resonate with you on a deeper level, there is still that part of you that is doubtful; that logical part of your mind is always butting in where it doesn’t belong.
You are trying to apply what you learn, but you may not be sure if you are doing it right. You may have a bit of ‘LOA anxiety.’ I know I did about certain things, and I sometimes still do. That conditioning runs deep. But, as I have gotten better at understanding LOA, my faith has grown, and things that were confusing, didn’t make sense logically, or seemed ‘too easy, are no longer as mystifying.
I don’t worry as much anymore about whether I am doing it ‘right.’ The results I have gotten speak for themselves, and as I advance, I feel better, and things are coming to me more easily. And that means it can happen for you too.
For me personally, there were three big issues that would invoke my ‘LOA anxiety,’ and I imagine many people reading this have similar ‘triggers.’ I would like to discuss them a bit, and hopefully help you feel a bit better.
Do I Seriously Have to Feel Good All the Time?
Since our emotional state is a primary component in what we attract into our experience, we know the importance of feeling good. But, this is often easier said than done. If we were able to just feel good no matter what, our lives would probably already be more to our liking. In theory, we can do that, but in reality, we have too much ‘stuff’ we need to work through to get there.
Now, I’ll be honest with you..the more you feel good, the faster the things you want will come to you. That has been my experience anyway. But, if you aren’t feeling good all the time, don’t panic or get all pissed off at yourself.
Chances are, your interest in LOA stemmed from something in your life not being to your liking, so as long as the situation remains as it is, these feelings can linger, even if you know there is no reason to feel them.
So, when you are not feeling good, or when the doubt or other negative thoughts start creeping in, you may feel all anxious. You worry you may have undone any progress you have made thus far; you start fearing you won’t get what you want because your emotional state is not ‘optimal.’
Well, as a deeply flawed human being prone to feelings of fear, anxiety, depression and all that good stuff, I can tell you that no, you don’t have to feel good every second. I managed to attract all sorts of awesome things, even though at times, I was anything but confident in LOA. The trick was, I worked on feeling good most of the time. I did my best to shift my focus when things got ugly upstairs. I fed my mind positive information to aid in reconditioning my thought patterns and beliefs for good.
How Long Should I Be Focusing on My Desire?
This was another one that really got me anxious, and sometimes still does. When we read about LOA, we are told we have to focus on our desire, and hold that picture in our mind. So, then we naturally wonder how often we have to do this. Has the Universe set a minimum daily time requirement for focusing? Is a few minutes enough? Do I need to do it for hours? Should I be thinking about it at least every three thoughts?
What if I don’t think about it enough? Will the Universe forget I want it? That would be terrible..I want it so bad! And, naturally, this causes a boatload of anxiety, and as we know, feeling badly totally throws us out of alignment with that magical, mysterious force that delivers up our desires made to order. The Universe forgetting was a big one with me, and that worry still creeps in sometimes. But, don’t worry, it won’t.
You will be happy to know there is no direct correlation between how much you focus on what you want and how fast you bring it into your experience. Know why? Because getting what we want through LOA is all about how we feel, not about how much we are thinking about what we want.
The fact of the matter is, thinking about what we want often makes us feel pretty crappy does it not? As soon as we start focusing, all this yucky stuff rises to the forefront of our mind—what is commonly referred to as ‘resistance’ in LOA speak.
If you have been doing any work with LOA, you know what I am talking about. The doubts about whether you will get this thing, all the reasons you think it isn’t possible, the logical part of your mind trying to figure out ‘how,’ putting too much focus on how things appear now, etc…Focusing is a great way to uncover your limiting beliefs surrounding what it is you want, so pay attention to what comes up. So, it can be a good tool.
Now, this is not to say you should not think about what you want—if you can do your focusing and feel really good about it, then go for it.
Can I Really Do Nothing and Still Get Results?
Oh boy, this is a big one for many of us I bet. The idea you don’t have to do anything to get what you want is not really a belief most of us have been instilled with. We are taught we have to struggle and strain, and work hard. But, not really.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Obviously certain actions are necessary to bring certain things into your life. Being manically happy, and staring at a wall all day, is not going to get your next blog post written, or your business off the ground. It will take some work to make these things a success, like networking or marketing.
As with anything on this blog, what I write is based on my own experience and understanding, and this is kind of how I see this component of LOA.
Remember how we feel is crucial to attracting the things we want. And in my experience, feeling good, and being really aligned, has always brought things to me with minimal effort–at least on the plane of actually physically ‘doing’ things. When I was out of alignment, and ‘logical’ Kelli was taking charge, I would feel the need to force things and push myself, even though I felt like shit…did I still get results? Sure, but it was much harder and much less pleasant.
But, the more I began to really understand LOA, the more this made sense to me, and the less I find myself ‘forcing’. Bringing the things you want into your life does not always require you take a specific action, these things will just happen without any effort on your part, except the effort of feeling good, of course.
Let’s say you are looking for a new job—sure, check the classifieds, and get in touch with people who you think may have some leads. Do anything you think will help you. But, don’t feel like you will only find a job if you devote 16 hours a day to scouring job sites and pounding the pavement, all the while, terrified you won’t find anything, and feeling like shit.
So long as you felt good (at least most of the time) you would find that job, you would line up with something, probably in a way you can’t anticipate, like a random meeting with a stranger in a coffee shop, or running into a former co-worker you haven’t seen in a decade, who sets you up with an interview at his current company.
Then there is inspired action—the urges you get to do things, and when you do them, they lead to great results, they somehow bring you closer to what you want. Inspired action feels good and effortless. You are in the flow. You are not trying to control things, or manipulate circumstances to work out in a certain way because you have decided that is the only way you can get what you want.
And, if your logical mind needs more convincing of this truth, think about all the times in your life that solutions to problems, or great ideas, came to you when you were feeling happy and light, when you really weren’t even thinking about the issue at hand or actively engaged in trying to ‘figure it out.’
When we are just feeling good, and not taking any sort of specific action, our minds are clearer, and we can more easily connect with that higher part of ourselves that has all the answers we seek. And yes, we all have that wise higher self, whether you want to believe it or not. 🙂 But, chances are anyone reading a post like this already knows that, but wanted to drive that point home just in case!
So, know when to step back from any activities you may be engaged in—there are no hard and fast rules. Check in with your emotions—you will know what to do. Remember, feeling good is the most important thing, so do what you can to feel good—it doesn’t have to be related to the thing you are trying to attract. In fact, it is probably a better idea if it isn’t.
Watch a funny movie, spend the next 45 minutes petting your cat…whatever raises your energy and makes you feel better.I am willing to bet watching my 30 Rock DVDs has helped me manifest more things than any specific actions I have ever taken.
Kelli,
What a very insightful post. LOA really works and I have recently truly tuned into it. It is amazing how we feel plays into LOA. I wish I would have focused on this many years ago but I am so thankful I am the wiser now. Thank you for writing on this subject as it is so important for others to know that it works!
Hey Nathaniel
Like you said, when we really tune in and start consciously working with LOA, you really see how our feelings come into play. It is just about getting that logical part of us to shut up and let everything unfold. It can take a bit though to retrain our brain!
Ditto on 30 Rock 😉 We manifest good things when feeling good, and feeling detached, and although action is part of the equation, feeling good IS the equation. Thanks for the power share!
Thanks Ryan…you mentioned detachment and that is a key ingredient as well–just trusting it will come, not getting attached to certain outcomes or trying to force things.
This is wonderful post! When I work as a therapist, so many people forget that one’s feelings and ways of being in those feelings truly do attract environmental factors around: albeit people or energy or other things. Its such a very real post that I would share this over and over!! Amazing. Thank you.
Hi Danielle
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment…I am so glad you liked the post. Your patients are very lucky to have a therapist who believes in things such as this–you can provide them with so much empowering advice that can really turn their lives around and give them hope that things can change no matter what they have experienced until now.
Whatever is funneling all of this strength and good stuff into my life probably has some dynamics of LOA. I do strive to keep positive. I recognize how good things are, stay thankful and the flow keeps coming. We see and attract what we notice or focus on. Great idea for a post! Keep up the good manifesting. =)
Hey Meredith
Based on my own experience, I would have to agree that LOA is definitely at work with the good stuff you have been bringing in. Our logical minds can’t easily grasp a concept such as this so it can be hard to go with something that we can’t ‘prove’ but my experience has been proof enough for me. And like you said, staying thankful is key–it will just bring more good.
Kelli I love your posts. This is exactly what I need in my life. I need to get out of my comfort zone and make shit happen. I have recently applied to numerous jobs that I never would have before. I may lack experience in these fields but like Michael Jordan said,” you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” It’s time to take some risks to get what I want.
Thanks Joe! I am glad you find them helpful. That is awesome you are doing that…all the great stuff is right outside our comfort zone. If we can take the leap, things can change in ways we can’t imagine right now. When I first got clear on what I wanted my life to be like, there was nothing to suggest it was possible from a ‘logical’ perspective. But, here I am now…just need to adjust our mindset.
Just stumbled over your site and just want to say what you have to say is awesome! You’ve been able to articulate so clearly what I’ve been thinking about the whole LOA thing, some of the struggles I have etc and the simple, relaxed way that your write really reflects your attitude and the attitude I think I’ve now developed. Crazy how your words were exactly what I needed. Finally I think I’m getting this 🙂
Hey Emily
You finding this blog and totally clicking with the info is total LOA in action..great how it works right? I am so glad you find the content helpful. LOA is very simple at its core, but applying it can be tricky because of all the conditioning. We need to soothe our minds a bit and give it some more to work with. Just keep at it, be patient and show yourself compassion. And keep up with the materials that resonate with you…part of successfully making the shift is the repetition of information that will help shift thought patterns. Hope to ‘see’ you around here more and hear all about your experiences.
