Law of Attraction: Getting Your Mind to Shut the F*ck Up and Letting Your Feelings Guide You

A teaching like the law of attraction places a lot of emphasis on tuning into our inner world and our feelings, and with good reason. That is where all the magic happens.

Today’s post is courtesy of a question someone left in a comment and I thought it would make a great blog post because I am sure this is something a lot of other people are wondering as well:

I am trying really hard to get in tune with my intuition and to stop listening to my rational mind. Are there any exercises (like meditations or something) that you recommend to help with releasing (aaaah, what can I “do” again!)? Or is it truly just choosing what you enjoy most and then doing it?

Our outer reality is simply a mirror of our inner world. If we want to make any significant, lasting change in our reality and ourselves, we always have to start there.

Always. No. Exceptions. Ever. But I digress as I often do.

Our inner world is home to our intuition, which can serve us quite well when we are able to hear it, and more importantly, heed its nudges.

Even the least ‘spiritual’ among us can likely attest to its existence, and have experienced those moments when heeding their ‘gut instinct’ turned out favorably for them, when they just ‘knew’ something without knowing how they knew it.

Our feelings let us know when we are tuning into that which is true and beneficial, and when we aren’t. It lets us know if our beliefs and perspectives are in line with that of our higher selves. It lets us know if how we are regarding ourselves is how the Universe regards us.

The stuff that’s true feels good and the stuff that’s shitty doesn’t–what a beautiful, simple, fail-proof system.

But us humans don’t do simple. We love to complicate the shit out of things. Our conditioning and our heavy emphasis on ‘logic’ ‘rational thinking’ and the like has caused a great divide between us and our feelings, our intuition, our true nature.

Your Mind Will Never Fully Get on Board

Your mind will never stop doing what it does. It will never want to stop being the guiding force in your life and decisions.

It will never fully release on the fear-based thought system on which our reality thrives. It will never totally reject the illusion in which we find ourselves.

It will hold on with all its might to its fears, limiting beliefs and shitty perspectives.

You’re never going to get rid of your mind.

You’re never going to completely rid yourself of fear and doubt and every ounce of your conditioning. After all, we are here having a human experience, and all of that stuff is part of being human so the way I see it it’s par for the course.

I know this sounds disheartening but the sooner you make peace with this, the easier it will be to power on in spite of these challenges.

It gets easier over time to ignore its input. The volume can turn down considerably.

As you manifest more and more ‘evidence’ of the true nature of reality and yourself, you more easily reject your mind’s machinations because your actual experience is starting to tell a different story.

You start to see more clearly your mind’s agenda and that is actually isn’t working in your best interest. Its main order of business is remaining in control, and keeping you where you are now, keeping you the same as you are now.

So, if we can’t beat our mind into complete submission to our spiritual work, the key to having it not totally ‘fuck up our shit’ is deceptively simple….

It Comes Down to Choice

So many of us complain that our mind is getting in the way of our manifesting. True story. No doubt.

But if we think our life isn’t changing because of our mind’s resistance to these types of teachings, we have to own the fact this is because we are choosing to let our mind run the show.

We are choosing to give into our fear. We are choosing to base our conclusions on past experience and what we have observed in the world around us. We are choosing to reject what our feelings are telling us in favor of what our mind is telling us.

As miserable as our current beliefs about life and ourselves make us, we fight for them to the death, and make the choice to hold onto them. We often don’t realize the extent to which we are doing this, but if you start paying closer attention, it will become painfully obvious.

We refuse to adopt a different way of looking at things, to look through our current reality, knowing it was built on a bunch of faulty beliefs and that it’s not real. Instead our mind focuses on ‘what is’ and uses that a valid reason to refuse to feel any better now, to hold onto its current beliefs.

We have all these fears and doubts, and because of them, we don’t act in manifesting-friendly ways. We don’t take beneficial steps that could lead us closer to the life we want. We don’t take advantage of opportunities that may present themselves.

We actively choose to ignore our intuition and feelings. Instead we act from ‘logical reasoning’ and/or fear.

We cling to our current way of doing things, basically refusing to ‘change our tune’ until we manifest some sort of ‘proof’ that doing things this easier, more feeling-centered way is valid.

I won’t lie to you…this shit can get really uncomfortable. It’s scary. You are being tasked with adopting a whole new belief system, with totally changing your view of yourself.

It requires some faith and trust. You have to be willing to start making this transition before you feel ‘ready,’ before you have manifested a ‘reason’ to permit yourself to feel this way, to act in certain ways.

You have to be willing to trust your feelings and intuition are serving the purpose you have been taught they are, and listen to them.

The wonderful thing is, you are always being supported, you are always moving towards what you want.

So you can’t ‘mess’ things up. You can’t really make a ‘wrong’ decision that will totally throw you off course permanently.

Knowing this can cut through some of that intense fear that comes with living from this sort of space.

You have to honestly assess how your current way of doing things and your current belief system have been working for you.

I am sure you will find not too well, so doesn’t it make sense to try another way? That right there is some good old logical thinking, and I don’t think your mind can argue with that.

Follow Your Feelings Without Expectation and Attachment

Our mind is so fixated on making certain things happen; it is so fixated on making sure we are doing this whole manifesting thing ‘right.’

It is so obsessed with figuring out exactly how it works so it can then use this knowledge to ensure it can successfully manifest exactly what it wants. It wants to ‘game’ consciousness and the Universe.

Its efforts at feeling good and becoming one with ‘spirit’ always have that ulterior motive of trying to get something.

Being happy for the sake of being happy is bullshit–it is using positive emotion as a means to an end.

Your mind doesn’t actually care if you are happy .It just cares about getting what it wants. Your mind is kind of a gigantic asshole

And it’s cool–we all want stuff. It’s okay. Don’t feel badly about that.

But when trying to manifest what we want is always at the forefront of our minds, we create a lot of anxiety; we delay the happiness that is available to us now. We obsess over our decisions and actions.

We take ourselves out of the ‘now’ and that’s really problematic because all we have is ‘now.’ That is where all the power lies.

We are constantly evaluating the ‘results’ of any action we take. We create all these attachments and expectations. We took an action that felt good and then we wait and see what it’s going to get us.

Then nothing of significance may happen immediately and we feel dejected. Or something happened that our mind didn’t like, and it loses it shit, throws a tantrum and misses the message.

We followed our intuition in a particular situation and we have this expectation some specific thing will manifest as a result that our mind is going to like, something ‘big’ some big ‘sign’ that we’re on the right track.

Then nothing of significance may happen immediately and we feel dejected. Or something happened that our mind didn’t like, and it loses it shit, throws a tantrum and misses the message.

Then we moan the law of attraction doesn’t ‘work.’

Do your best to just live your life. Consciously engage your energy and get more comfortable following your feelings and your intuition. Don’t constantly analyze your life and whether what you are doing is ‘working.’

Know you are being supported and led exactly where you want to be, that you are being assisted in a way you can’t even come close to understanding with your mind.

The Universe knows what you want–it got the memo the moment the desire was sparked. It is set up to work for you and not against you. We’re not living in some random chaos where there is no meaning and we’re all on our own down here.

The good old U wants to give you all sorts of awesome shit. We are meant to be happy and prosperous. We are meant to manifest with ease and be happy.

Life isn’t supposed to be hard; we are not expected to struggle and suffer to get what we want. We are not expected to make it all happen ourselves. We don’t have to ‘prove’ we are worthy and deserving, we are by default.

But the Universe can’t defy our vibration; we can’t make ‘demands’ on it to give us what we want just because we want it.

You can’t enter into that very beneficial relationship of co-creation when you are constantly fixated on specific manifestations, trying to control things or figure it all  and, letting your mind constantly talk you out of following your feelings and intuition, and giving into its fear-based thought system.

You can’t enter into that wonderful partnership when you are constantly judging your experience now and everything that manifests in your reality as ‘good’ or ‘bad,’ and then freaking out about the ‘bad’ not seeing it is actually showing you something that will be very helpful for you to see.

So, What Can You ‘Do’ ?

Like many people, awesome question-asker wanted to know what to ‘do,’ realizing at that moment she was still in ‘action-mode.’ She wanted to know if it really did boil down to doing what felt good.

Here’s the thing. Our energy creates, not the actions. Tools can only help you if they change your focus, change how you feel. Just doing certain things, like saying affirmations, won’t make anything change in your reality.

But, these sorts of ‘actions’ can be very helpful because they are a means of consciously engaging with our energy. This conscious engagement is a non-negotiable. We have to get off autopilot.

We have to know how we are feeling, we have to evaluate if we are making shifts. We need to work on changing our energy if it doesn’t support our awesomeness.

Consciously engaging with consistency is the real linchpin. The more consistent we are, the faster things shift. Again, this is where using tools that resonate with us on a regular basis can help, this is where rituals can help.

The old energy has a lot of momentum, and doing the tools, the exercises and what have you, help break it up, and build the momentum behind the energy that serves us.

In my coaching, I give clients all sorts of things to work on between sessions–again, this stuff is valuable for conscious engagement, and integrating the teachings.

So I would recommend you do things on a regular basis that make you feel good, that help you focus in a way that serves you. As for the ‘what’ that really boils down to resonance.

I am a big fan of meditation. I really like affirmations. I like writing a letter to the Universe thanking it for all the awesome stuff.

I like writing down all the worries and things I don’t want to happen–ya know, just so the Universe knows for sure what I don’t want–and burning it or ripping it up. I like writing down limiting beliefs and fears and then coming up with a bunch of reasons, examples, etc…why they aren’t valid.

But it is important to know that this sort of ‘official’ personal development work is not the only beneficial thing to do. Remember it is all about creating a higher vibration, feeling better.

So anything you do that helps achieve that end is a good thing, whether it is engaging in a hobby, exercising, spending more time with friends, taking a nice hot bath, whatever…it really doesn’t matter.

Make doing things you enjoy a priority in your life–enjoying your life and feeling happier is all you really want anyway. I know your mind makes a great case as to why you can’t feel better until certain things change, but it’s bullshit.

And the wonderful thing is, this approach is what creates faster changes in your reality. Just do your best though to work on being happy for the sake of being happy.

Try to move away from making your whole life, and everything you do, about manifesting what you don’t have yet. Getting our hands on a teaching like the law of attraction can easily move us down this road so we have to be careful.
.
We get way more involved in the process than necessary.

Remember if you get your energy right, it’s all good, and your life will be filled with stuff you like.

But a key component is that willingness to choose in favor of what we want, and get in ‘flow’ by allowing ourselves to follow our feelings and our intuition, a willingness to reject our mind’s chatter, no matter how uncomfortable it can feel at times.

  1. Nice post Kelli. I agree so much. The mind tries to get in the way and figure things out.

It’s really all about just letting go and letting the flow take us there. It’s so simple, but our minds want to overcomplicate it.

    1. Hi Brandon
Thanks for your comment. I agree with the letting go. I think that scares people a lot because it feels like they are no longer taking control but it’s not about surrendering your life, just your fearful thoughts.

  2. wow what an article…i love how you get your point across. i heard a saying somewhere that if you hear a voice in your head dont listen as its the ego trying to deter you but if you feel something is right then that is your intuition and go with your feelings. very powerful stuff. thank you for a great read 🙂

    1. Hi Kerry
Thanks for your comment and I am so glad you enjoyed the post. That is great advice.

  3. This is so awesome! I love it! I agree with Brandon, it truly is about letting go and trusting the “good old U”. Since I have begun to make it a priority to do things that I enjoy, I have felt a significance shift in my energy. Thank you so much for the work that you do.

    1. Hi Yessy
Thanks for your comment and I am so glad you enjoyed the post. Isn’t it great how something so simple can work so well for shifting energy? It is just about getting more comfortable allowing ourselves to be ‘motivated’ by positive emotion and not resistance to our current reality and then trying to change it from that space.

  4. Hi Kelli. I enjoyed your post as always. What worked for me early on was having someone who had my permission to get on my case if I started obsessing about “reality” and losing focus on where I really wanted to go. For me, it was great because I could be taking to him and he could stop me and tell me to think back on what I had just said, then shift my language to be more in line with what I really wanted. The trick is that you can’t get mad at the person. You have to be open to receiving the criticism in a helpful way.

    1. Hi Ben
Thanks for your comment and so glad you enjoyed the post. I really love that suggestion–someone who can give a more objective assessment of what is happening. Once our emotions and mind get churning, we can get really caught up in that. I love what you said about not being able to get mad at the person. In many ways, I feel like my husband Ryan does this for me, and it is easy to get really resistant to the ‘wisdom’ when you’re in a lower vibe.

  5. Great post Kelli. It reminded me again how important it is to focus on the moment. I think the mind likes to get obsessed with the future and how it will unfold. I know that’s my problem at times. But refocusing on having said thing “now” really feels amazing if I allow myself to get fully immersed in it.

Also too, for me it’s important to find and choose “relief” when I’m trying too hard. Plus balancing my life in a way that I have me time. Recently made a big move that took almost a month to complete. It completely threw me off my routine and now I’m getting back on track again. It reminded me of how important it is to sustain and maintain my positive momentum, nurture it.

Thoroughly enjoyed this post. Thank you!

    1. Hey Corin
Thanks so much for your comment. I hope you are enjoying your new locale. I believe you had talked about this during a coaching session…you were planning on going to a different part of Hawaii correct? Isn’t it great that with a bit of focus we can cultivate a feeling at any moment? One of the many ‘tools’ we are naturally bestowed with in order to deliberately create our experience. I like what you said about ‘relief’ It is a very powerful means to opening up some energy and a new pathway energetically.

      1. Hi Kelli,

Yes, I finally made the move this month. I really got into that space and also we got exactly the amount of money I had written down in a pretend contract! I can say I didn’t always do things perfectly with my vibration but did the best I could and things continually fell into place. I was often reminded by what you say, that we are always moving towards what we want. Those words have been very comforting at many times when doubts would creep in.

There are other interesting developments in my life, slow going but I see the changes and they are noticeable. It’s been really good. I have exciting things to share with you, but I’m waiting to see how more unfolds. Looking forward to chatting with you again in the future!

        1. Hey Corin
Our ‘best’ is all we can ever do…luckily perfection is not required or we’d all be screwed. Looking forward to talking with you again soon…you’ll know when the time is right. Enjoy your new home

  6. Great post Kelli,
Lots of things that resonate with me. One of the things I like about the LOA is that it really isn’t just about ‘understanding’ how it works. It derails that intellectual approach and makes it look a bit ridiculous. I need that, as I have ‘self taught’ myself loads of things in my life, by learning, understanding and following a process, but all this with no emotional input particularly. Having to locate, notice and listen to my emotions and let go of my pride in my ability to understand is really hard. And to try to manifest a happy life without it being another ‘project’ is just as hard. Letting go of the concept of an outcome being arrived at by hard work and concentrated ‘doing’ is also tough, but I’m getting there. I certainly agree that we re here to ‘be’ and to experience the full nature of what being human is.
Happiness for happiness sake, yup, makes sense to me. Things can be part of that, but should never be essential. Otherwise we can fall into that trap –
“OK, I’m happy, so where’s the money?”
Sorry to ramble, this was only going to be short comment. . . 😉
    Jon x

    1. Hi Jon
Thank you so much for your comment and I am so glad you enjoyed the post. You weren’t rambling at all. In fact, I think you very eloquently explained the difference between creating from energy and how we typically go about getting what we want in life and our pursuit of happiness. A lot of people will be able to relate to your thoughts I’m sure. You’re right–this is an emotional process not an intellectual one. That doesn’t mean constantly evaluating our thoughts and feelings but it does mean we do have to tune into our inner workings and see what is happening. It is very different for sure but once we really start giving it a real go, I think we will find it is the more pleasant and easy way to go about living our lives.

  7. Hi Kelli, thanks for the post. That’s a good summary of how it’s energy that creates and tools help you to change your focus and how you’re feeling.
