Obviously the law of attraction places a premium on your emotional state, and the pressure to ‘feel good’ can quickly mount. Chances are, your interest in a teaching like this stemmed from being unhappy with your life in some way, and you may not be feeling too great, at least about one particular area in your life.
And there is a chance you may be feeling really, really unhappy, perhaps miserable, and any better-feeling perspective may seem light years away.
Allowing any real shift in your emotional state before being presented with a ‘reason’ to feel better may be a very new concept for you, as it is for many of us. And our mind isn’t so keen on this mode of operating.
What are you to do? You know you need to work on shifting all that shit. But as you may have discovered, simply telling yourself you need to feel better because you now understand the importance of it, may not be working out too well.
This whole ‘feeling good’ thing also tends to get you thinking about finding your ‘passions’ and your ‘purpose.’ And again, you may feel a bit stuck here, especially if you have been stuck in a lower vibration, and really entrenched in a life you don’t want.
Today’s post was inspired by the following question I received on the blog:
Hi! Love your posts, def cheered me up when I was feeling down. I have a question though, what do you do if (when you’re not in your best mind set) you can’t seem to think about or put your fingers on exactly what makes you “feel good” or what your genuine passions are? How do you get in touch with these feelings when you’re feeling down and unwantingly putting too much energy on negative stuff that is out of your control and doesn’t even exist? I’d love to hear back from you!
Andrea
You May Have to Work Up to ‘Good’
Like I mentioned earlier, the pressure to feel good can quickly build as you immerse yourself in a teaching like the law of attraction. After all, that seems to be the answer to getting all your ‘stuff’ so you best get cracking on that.
We quickly see positive emotion ,not as the goal, but a means to an end. And when we start having trouble cultivating it, we get all bent out of shape because we know this struggle is just messing things up for us.
Consciously we may not be aware we are operating from this sort of space, but we are; and that is why it frustrates us so much. It’s almost as if we really don’t care about being happy, but rather, just manifesting what our mind has set its sights on.
Now, just to be clear–it’s okay you want to manifest certain things. Not a problem. It’s not a terrible thing you have this ‘ulterior motive’ to wanting to improve your emotional state. We all have it so some degree.
But a big part of doing this work ‘successfully’ is making peace with where you are now, and realizing you may need to work up to ‘good.’
While in theory you can turn your emotions on a dime, most of us won’t be able to do that, and that doesn’t indicate any sort of ‘defect.’
There is a huge amount of momentum behind the energies you are contending with now, a shit load of conditioning that is very deeply ingrained.
Anyone capable of just dropping all that shit immediately would have already done so long ago, and would never be in the position in which most of us find ourselves by time we make our way to a teaching such as the law of attraction.
We all have a vibrational ‘range’ if you will, and the type of ‘good’ you are reaching for may not be in your current ‘range.’ .
This means that while you may be able to achieve these states of feeling really warm and fuzzy, and one with the Universe, at times (we always have access to that sort of vibration, we just have a lot of shit obscuring it) it probably doesn’t last because it may be a distance from your current ‘range.’
The ‘old’ feelings and ways of being are still pretty dominant and it likely doesn’t take much to to knock you back down there.
So if someone was really depressed for example, reaching right for a feeling where you can’t wait to get out of bed every day and loving your life every second, will probably be futile.
Those two vibrations are really, really far apart from each other, and you’ll probably have some stops in between.
So, if you can’t feel ‘good’ that’s fine. You may need to just work on feeling ‘better.’ Wherever you are now, what is a thought or perspective you can reach for that doesn’t feel totally foreign to you, that can actually cultivate some emotion that is a bit more positive?
For example, if you are really hating your job, it may be hard for you to believe you can find an awesome job in line with your passions and pays great, and you excitedly wait for it to manifest. But from that space, you might concede that you don’t know every job that exists in the world, and you will stop being so insistent your situation won’t change.
The key is something that actually sparks some emotion. Trying to think a thought that intellectually you know is ‘positive’ but has zero ‘charge’ behind it, won’t get you far.
And for the most part, this is what we are often doing. We’re ‘thinking positive’ but energetically, nothing of significance is really happening, which in turn means nothing is really changing externally.
You Gotta Deal with Your Shit
If manifesting really boiled down to setting intentions, making vision boards, saying affirmations, filling your head with ‘positive’ thoughts, and the like, everyone who did these things would have everything they wanted.
But that’s not the case because that stuff, while certainly helpful, isn’t enough. That stuff really doesn’t address the true blocks to a different reality taking shape for you.
One of the reasons we struggle with feeling good is because we simply don’t and there are lots of reasons why we don’t feel good.
One of the reasons we try so hard to engage in ‘positive thinking’ is because our current line of thinking isn’t so positive.
We are trying to cultivate more positive emotion from a space of fighting against our ‘negative’ emotion. We are trying to manifest from a space of intense resistance to our current reality.
Again, we try to use positive emotion as a means to an end, a way to get what we want, a way to make the icky feelings go away.
But they probably just won’t go away. The ‘positivity’ is kind of weak, and not strong enough to fully ‘override’ them.
A space for that positive emotion needs to be cleared out in our energy field for it to really take root, and to really build some momentum.
And the only way to clear that space is to allow ourselves to feel all the crappy feelings, to be honest with how we feel about our lives now, to examine the feelings triggered by the absence of the things we want in our life.
Now this doesn’t mean intense inquiry into your emotional state for hours a day every day. But if you’re feeling shitty, if you are really focused on what you don’t have, and it is making you feel really badly, you have to look at that stuff.
When it comes to things you want a lot, and you are having a hard time thinking ‘positively’ about these things, truly believing it is possible to have them, and constantly focused on its absence, you have to look at what’s going on there.
This isn’t comfortable and I know you don’t want to be bothered doing that. You just want to know what you can ‘do’ to get what you want, and hopefully sidestep this portion of the manifesting journey.
But if you truly want to feel happier–which is the true desire that lies at the root of every manifestation you have set your sights on–this is the ticket.
So dive in. It’s not as scary as you think.
Finding Your ‘Passions’ and ‘Purpose’
There is a lot of talk about passions and purpose in the personal development world, and with good reason.
It feels good to do things that you feel passionate about. It feels good to think you have a purpose.
I feel really passionate about reality creation and the law of attraction, and I love helping people on their own journeys of conscious creation. I love that I can earn money doing something I love.
And because of the importance placed on these concepts, it doesn’t feel too good when we are not indulging in things about which we feel passionate, when we feel like we have no purpose.
We may feel a lot of pressure to ‘figure it out.’
There are a couple of things I would say about this that will hopefully ease some of that pressure.
Like I said before, we may need to climb the ladder gradually as far as our emotional state goes. So in your current state, you may not be able to get in touch with what you feel passionate about.
You may not be able to quite tap into that sort of energy and that’s okay.
If your life has been the stereotypical ‘grind’ where you work a job you hate,or you fell into some life you never wanted and got too deep to see a way out, bowed to societal or familial pressure, etc…you may not have given any real thought to what you feel passionate about, what type of life you actually wanted.
This whole idea of being a powerful creator, and being able to shape your reality by way of your inner world, is really new and foreign.
It might take a bit of digging to really get in touch with yourself. This work really helps you get to know yourself at depths you have never reached down to before. Embrace this journey, embrace the uncertainty and discomfort–it will make it a lot easier.
It will all reveal itself, but you may be to be a bit patient. Don’t expend a lot of mental energy trying to ‘figure it out.’
And ‘passion’ is closely tied to ‘purpose’ so I wanted to work that in.
I believe we are ‘on purpose’ the second we get here. I believe our ‘purpose’ is to experience this reality from our wholly unique perspective, and add to that expansion of ‘all that is.’
I believe our purpose is to be ‘happy.’ While I think our soul may have come here with some general intentions, I don’t think there is one thing we are ‘supposed’ to be doing, and we are tasked with figuring out what that something is, and until such point we do, we are basically wasting precious time.
I do think though, that we all have unique contributions to make, and things that interest us, things that make us feel good are not ‘random’ and can clue us into what avenues may maximize our fulfillment and well-being.
For some of us, it may be some grand mission and for others, it might be more ‘modest.’ Some people may feel driven to save the world, while others just want a nice simple life, with a happy marriage, some money in the bank and a satisfying job.
The former is not ‘better’ than the latter. If you’re working to become the best version of yourself, and to be a happier person, you’re on purpose in my book.
So that’s that. Hope you enjoyed my thoughts on this question.
Your Turn
What did you think of the post? Anything resonate in particular? Any advice for shifting that energy? Have you figured out your ‘passions?’
Also, wanted to let you know the call about manifesting money I did a few weeks back is still available for purchase…I know it’s a popular topic. You can find it here

Hi Kelli,
I really liked what you said about embracing the uncertainty, and not stressing about figuring out our purpose, or our passion. This is where I am at right now, trying to find something, anything that I actually want to do. I have all this time on my hands, and all I really want to do is sleeping in, relaxing and experimenting with my newfound manifesting – powers. Right now this is all I’m excited about and just to have someone saying it’s ok not to know my passion, that helps a lot! 🙂
Hi Astrid
Thanks so much for your comment and I am glad you enjoyed the post. If you are following your feelings and intuition, you can’t go wrong. There is a lot of value in how you’re going about doing things now so just go with it and see where it leads you. But also don’t feel pressure that you need to come up with some big realization or plan of action either during this time. It will all reveal itself and this relaxed attitude will make it easier for these insights to make their way to you.
I go back and forth on the passion thing. I don’t really have a passion right now and I’m not sure if I actually need it or if having it would help me along at the present time.
I’m always big on the law of attraction though. I find that when I’m in the right mindset not only is my work fun but things seem to come out of the woodwork that, though somewhat expected, is right in line with what I’m manifesting at the time.
Still, those outside factors are a killer to deal with. Right now my issue is not sleeping more than 2 1/2 hours a night… I’ll work on that one though.
Hi Mitch
It is interesting to see how things work out well when we’re in flow and when our mindset is in a certain place–that helps bolster faith and it gets easier to operate from a space of ‘being’ rather than ‘doing’ and trying to control everything. The key is enjoying your life in whatever way and that will open the door to more good-feeling things.
Hi Kelli, I enjoyed your pst. I liked your thoughts on passion and purpose. For years I’ve tried to find my life purpose but I’m still not sure what it is. I’ve tried that exercise where you write things down until you find the answer that makes you cry but that’s never worked for me.
I know I’m passionate about music and books, so I like to listen to music and read and I blog about music.
Hello Moonsparkle
Thanks for your comment and I am glad you enjoyed the post. I am happy you resonated with my thoughts–especially if you are feeling a bit stuck there, this point of view hopefully provided some relief and eased the pressure a bit. It sounds like you have some strong interests already that you are devoting time to so that’s great. You never know the variety of opportunities that can spring from it so when you’re in the moment of enjoying those things, really enjoy them and get into that energy as fully as you can.
Hi Kelli. I think anytime you feel pressure, that should be a sign that you need to stop for a moment and remember what you are trying to do. You’re working too hard. Of course that is easier said that done. I read it all the time from Abraham-Hicks too. Feeling good is your end goal, but most people can’t jump straight there. I think they say that you can only move 1 or 2 steps from whatever emotion you are currently at. If you’re depressed, then maybe angry is a step in the right direction for you. There is more life energy in angry, just don’t stay there longer than you have to.
Hi Ben
Thanks for your comment and great insights as always. I totally agree that noticing the pressure is a little warning sign to step back and reassess. I also agree that anger specifically can be very healing and on the other side of that, lots of energy can be opened up and we can begin moving forward in a way that we may not have thought we could before we let ourselves have that release.
Hi, I really loved your post, I have been doing self work for over 5 years now. I question everything I do and one thing is why are we here what is our purpose.
I finally feel like I’m at rest with that question. I believe like you said is to come back to presence a place where there is no resistance and you are complete, not needing anything. Then go ahead and play the game of creation.
Further, I asked how do we really know what we truly want? when people crate vision boards are they truly wanting that or is that what what they think they want because of society? I realised in order to find that we have to experience life, go travel first then ask is that what you want, go test drive that car, go try that job or that job. Life then becomes a surprise!
Hi Vick
Thanks for your comment and I am glad you enjoyed it. I like how you put that–play the game of creation. That is a great space from which to create. A lot more fun and a lot less stress! I think that it can take awhile for us to zero in on what we are really after–no matter what we want certain feelings. And the representations of these energies formulated by our mind may not always be the most accurate. It is okay to want to manifest specific things like money or a relationship but when we can keep in mind the broader desire, it is easier to detach from the manifestation and cultivate the energy now somehow even if we don’t have this thing, and that is exactly what lends itself to it showing up, funnily enough. I agree that being open to letting experiences guide us in figuring out what we are truly after. This ‘work’ really requires us to go within and get to know ourselves better.
