I have studied law of attraction quite a bit, and have been applying what I have learned for several years now. I have gained a deeper understanding of how to practically apply the principles, and it is my favorite topic to cover on my blog.
Why? Because I know how frustrating it can be to try and work with a process that is supposed to be so damn simple, but feels really hard, especially when we first start out, or have set our sights on something big and important to us.
The essence of LOA is pretty basic. Ask and it is given. Believe you can have what you want. Act as if you already have it. Feel the feelings that lie behind what you want to manifest, and you’ll attract it, as well as a bunch of other great stuff that feels just as good.
But, the problem with this simple equation is that little thing called resistance. When you throw this into the mix, you are creating a whole different scenario.
When you have resistance, you sometimes just can’t ‘feel good’ at will–well, we can actually, but you know how it goes. You all of a sudden can’t drop beliefs you have been believing your whole life in favor of the ones necessary to fully step into your role of powerful creator.
You can’t just dismiss all the ‘proof’ you have gathered that said crappy beliefs are true. After years of believing certain things aren’t possible for you, you probably won’t instantaneously believe you can have them without a shred of doubt.
Your mind is not just going to sit back, and let this new way of thinking take root without putting up a fight. It just doesn’t ‘make sense.’ It seems too good to be true. It doesn’t like change, even when that change is in positive direction—it’s uncomfortable, and will prefer to go back to the old way.
There is a lot of momentum behind your more negative beliefs and feelings, and just all of a sudden switching gears and heading towards happy town, will feel really hard sometimes. Your mind is not used to going there, and staying in this frame of mind for any sustained amount of time will take a bit of practice.
The good news is, resistance can be overcome. It might not be immediate. You may not be able to become a match for the highest possibilities available to you, right in this moment (and perhaps you never will unless you develop some God-like consciousness where you managed to drop every limiting belief you hold), but you can still manifest some pretty awesome stuff. I know I have. We have a belief system, it’s okay.
Right now I am living in Bali for free, doing a house and pet sitting job. I spent four months in Fiji several months ago doing the same thing. I travel the world for as long as I want, whenever I want. Consciously applying the principles of LOA helped me improve my financial situation dramatically. It helped bring me an awesome husband.
And guess what? I certainly maintained some degree of resistance in creating certain things, particularly in the money department. Perhaps some of my stuff would have come more quickly, but what are you gonna do? It still came though.
Am I completely free of resistance? Hell no. It has certainly decreased substantially, and manifesting is becoming easier and easier. The idea is not to achieve some perfect vibration that is 100 percent squeaky clean.
It is about being able to cultivate the warm, fuzzy feelings and beliefs a majority of the time, to have them be predominant.
And here are my top tips for dealing with this most unwelcome resistance.
Give Yourself Permission to Be Happy and Bring Awesome Things into Your Life
This might sound like a weird tip, but given the myriad weird beliefs we hold deep down, and the bastard our mind can be sometimes, it really isn’t all that strange.
While not the sole cause, a lot of resistance can come from the fact that we are fighting ourselves on feeling better.
Our mind likes to point out all the reasons why we should not be happy, why we are totally justified in feeling shitty. The moment we try to focus our attention elsewhere, it likes to pull us right back to all our problems, and other undesirable bits of our immediate experience. It will put together a nice highlight reel of past humiliations, betrayals, traumatic events, regrets, sadness and the like.
And the more we allow it to do this, the harder it will be to let go of our stories, and believe things can be different, and the easier it will be to remain in the ‘woe is me’ frame of mind.
You have to give yourself permission to feel better, to be happy, to start anew energetically speaking. Don’t underestimate the power of setting these specific intentions—in these moments, you can begin to shift energy quite nicely, and provided you commit to keeping the momentum going, start seeing changes more quickly than you think.
You also need to give yourself permission to create all sorts of awesomeness. You have to believe you deserve it. You have to acknowledge your ‘right’ to want whatever it is you want. You have to release any guilt you may feel over wanting more. You have to realize that it is okay to not just be content with ‘good enough.’
Enough of this nonsense of feeling like you should learn to be okay with things because they aren’t absolutely terrible or you don’t totally hate the situation. You want to create a life you love, not just one you merely tolerate, that is your right.
When you grant yourself these permissions, you will start feeling better, and since we attract based on what we feel, this is a very good, important step in the right direction.
You’re a Human with a Range of Emotions..Accept It
You know what makes resistance a million times harder to deal with? Resisting it. That just adds fuel to the fire. It just prolongs and intensifies what is happening.
Like good LOA students, we work on feeling good and raising our vibration, and we don’t like it one bit when we are feeling badly.
The negative emotion often feels more intense. This usually occurs for two reasons. First, this work has opened us up to our feelings more, and there is less suppression and denial. Secondly, if you have achieved states of feeling good more often, these lower energy times are much more unpleasant when held in comparison.
We get mad at ourselves and our ‘weakness.’ Being aware of the role we have in creating our reality, we get super-pissed that we can’t just seem to get out of our own way.
There is the tendency to develop ‘unrealistic’ expectations about the emotional transformation we will undergo—I really don’t like using that word, but for the purposes of what I was trying to express, it seemed fitting in this instance.
This idea of ‘perfection’ was a big issue for me, and being someone so committed to her personal growth, still is. But, the willingness to concede I was a ‘flawed’ human being with a range of emotions, and that I am not some Buddha, has really helped with this whole resistance thing.
I no longer feel a sense of defeat when the more ‘undesirable’ emotions surface. I may not totally be loving how I’m feeling in the moment, but I don’t fight it as much anymore.
Fears surface sometimes. Things happen that throw me for a loop emotionally. Sometimes I get in bad moods, and I see certain energies reflected in my manifestations that day. There are days when I just wake up feeling ‘off’ and I never fully shift the energy.
You will get frustrated sometimes that certain beliefs and feelings appear to be lingering, even after you know there is no validity to them—this shit runs deep, and it can take a bit for this knowing to really get to the core.
If you can accept that this stuff will happen, that it may take a bit of time to shift bigger beliefs fully, that you may have days when you are just not feeling great, you have no idea how much easier this work becomes.
You may not feel great in the moment, but you will suffer less—suffering after all, is not the direct result of what is happening, but how we are perceiving it. When we learn to resist the resistance less, getting back to our ‘happy place’ gets a lot easier. It seems less far away from us. There is less deliberate effort to shift energy, it just happens more naturally.
This moment will pass eventually, and you’ll go back to being all happy and shiny soon, or at the very least, a more neutral space. And at some point, these moments will probably come again. It’s all part and parcel of this glorious human experience in which we came to indulge.
You don’t have to become besties with all the crap, but at the very least, be willing to accept when it is there. Do what you can to shift, but don’t force yourself into a space that is just too far away from you at this moment. You may not be able to feel good, but you can probably feel better.
Seeing the Value in ‘Mindless’ or ‘Frivolous’ Activities
This whole ‘feeling good’ thing as the core of attracting the stuff we want most sounds good, but our mind can have a hard time accepting it. Most of us were instilled with the belief that getting what you want required hard work, a ‘no pain no gain’ mentality, figuring out every last detail, solving problems head on, and the like. We always had to keep our eye on the prize, and it is all about the blood, sweat and tears.
In order to get stuff that made us feel good, we had to do a whole bunch of stuff that didn’t. Kind of screwy when you really think about it, no? Anything fun, frivolous, mindless or what have you was meant to be indulged in after all the drudgery had been completed.
The idea that the process of getting what we want can be one of ease, joy and just actions that feel good and right, can seem downright ludicrous. Doing stuff that simply makes us feel good, activities that are not in any way related to producing our end desired result? Sheer nonsense.
But, the more we begin to understand how LOA works, the more this way of being makes perfect sense. What better way to shift our energy and perspective than doing things that simply make us feel better, no matter what that entails?
But, to really benefit from this powerful resistance-shifting tool, you can’t just indulge in these activities, you have to truly buy into the value of this mode operating. If you skip this step, these feel-good activities will be akin to saying affirmations that your mind rejects completely and instantly.
The whole time, there will be an inner dialogue making accusations of laziness, or that you should really be spending your time doing something unpleasant instead because it is necessary to get the result you want.
Your mind will tell you that you should be obsessing over finding the solution to that problem, or figuring out exactly how you are going to get what you want, so you can begin manipulating, forcing and getting all attached to certain outcomes.
You will think that you should be sitting there dissecting the resistance and all the unpleasant emotions until you have figured out what is happening. Little caveat—sometimes you will have to do this for big beliefs that just have way too much energy behind them, or when you keep having similar unwanted manifestations over and over again.
The end result? These ‘feel good’ activities will end up not feeling that good at all.
Now, will you just be able to totally immerse yourself in these activities, and completely silence that voice the whole time each and every time? Perhaps not, and that’s okay.
Will you sometimes be resistant to doing this, and keep engaging in what feels badly, feeling like this is the way to what you want? Probably.
There will be times when you are going to have to basically force yourself to do this stuff..it is going to feel uncomfortable. But, the only way to see that this strategy actually works is engaging in it.
When we allow ourselves to do things that achieve the all-important goal of simply feeling better, amazing things happen. Your perspective on your situation changes.
You can more easily shift your focus to what you want instead of what you don’t. You are in a less emotionally charged state where you can examine your resistance more effectively.
You will begin to see all sorts of manifestations that support acting in this manner, which will make it a lot easier to do. You will not be as resistant to moving away from the pain.
The belief that you have to suffer to get what you want will begin to weaken, and you will be less inclined to take actions that interfere with your manifestation rather than support its arrival.
In Closing…
You were instilled with a bunch of beliefs that make you think you can’t have what you want. Your self-image may be a bit tarnished. Accept it. It’s okay. It doesn’t mean you are doomed. We can’t just ignore it all, and hope it will go away.
The theory of attraction and putting it into practice is often quite different because of the resistance.
You are not defective; it’s understandable why it doesn’t feel as easy as it is supposed to be. As you begin shifting your resistance, seeing more ‘proof’ this stuff is real and all that jazz, it will get easier and easier.
Make peace with this process, and you’re good to go.
Your Turn…
What did you think of this post? Did anything in particular resonate with you? How are you dealing with your resistance? Would you offer any other tips? Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

Hi Kelli, I’m sorry to hear about your accident. I hope you’re feeling ok and your ankle heals soon.
I have been feeling better lately, feeling happier but then I come down again. I think part of the problem is I’m afraid that if I feel “too happy” then “something bad” will happen. (This is a belief I need to work on). So I’m kind of afraid to feel happy. But I know that in life there are ups and downs, sometimes you feel good and sometimes bad things happen but then good times come again. I’ve had depression since I was a teenager, so I haven’t felt properly happy for a long time but I’ve found that studying LOA has helped me to shift some things. A few months ago I came across an article on the subject on being afraid of being happy in case bad things happen. I saved it somewhere, will have a look for the link in case it’s of use to anyone.
You give some good tips. The one I could do with practising more is accepting my different emotions. Thanks for the post. 🙂
Hey Miss Moonsparkle
Thanks..I am making a nice recovery. Luckily I wasn’t going fast..but then again, that really had nothing to do with it. That accident was happening one way or another from a vibrational feedback point of view I suppose!
You are definitely not alone in that belief..I think a lot of us struggle with that one based on the conditioning we have received, particularly about the idea of some sort of ‘balance,’ in the Universe making sure none of us have it too good because that would be unfair or something.
But, when we think about this from an attraction standpoint, it kind of falls apart for a couple of reasons. First, it would imply that something is keeping tabs on all of us, and making sure to dole out some crap to keep us in line or whatever. Second, when we realize everything is just vibrational feedback, and not there to teach us a lesson, punish us or the like, we realize anything we attract is simply something being mirrored back to us.
Most of us probably won’t achieve some perfect vibration where nothing ever unwanted happens to us again, and we really don’t need to make that the goal. These situations will serve us in some way, and help us clear out, fine tune or something else beneficial. As time goes on, and this way of thinking becomes more natural to us, we will also probably develop a different perspective on these types of manifestations. They will not bother us as much. The fear of something bad happening will also probably subside to some degree because we know even if something does, we’ll work through it and come out stronger on the other side.
LOA certainly helped with my depression and anxiety because for me, a sense of powerlessness was what contributed to feeling that way, and realizing I could operate in a way that gave me power, was life-changing.
Hi Kelli, glad to hear that you’re recovering well. 🙂
Yes, I think the worry for me (and probably a lot of us) is “What if something bad happens and I can’t cope with it?”. But like you said, if it does hopefully we’ll be able to work through it and feel better again.
I’m glad that your depression and anxiety has improved. Studying LOA and doing other self help work has helped with mine too. I’ve been able to work through some beliefs and shift some things.
I think that is a common worry..our mind is good at scaring us into thinking of all the terrible things that may befall us in the future. From my experience of very trying times that I have went through, once you are in the thick of it, it just kind of becomes a part of your reality and we end up coping with things much better than we think we would when imagining how a particular situation would feel. That is great you have been able to make some shifts..I can tell you are diligent about your efforts, and you have a good attitude..both of those things will serve you very well.
Sorry to hear you had a mishap on you bike Kelli, wishing you a complete recovery.
An illuminating post, as usual. After a long stretch of feeling on top of the world I had an unexpectedly down day yesterday. I felt grumpy and annoyed and bored all day and couldn’t figure out why. I felt as though I was just fed up with everything and waiting for things to happen and my reality was boring me. I tried to engage in activities that I enjoyed and this distracted me from my feelings a bit. Then I was really tired at the end of the day. Do you think that’s the feeling you get when your reality is about to change? Now I feel ok again today (even though it’s raining and I rather wish it wasn’t!). Do you think we need to pinpoint why we have a bad day or do you think it’s resistance releasing spontaneously and we don’t really need to get to the bottom of it, especially if it is just transient?
Hey Bunny
Thanks…I am doing a lot better. It definitely served me so I am not feeling too bummed about it, but I look forward to being able to walk again normally…we really take mobility for granted!
I can relate to that experience for sure. That is something that still happens to me sometimes. Ill have days when I am totally vibing high, and then something will happen, and totally throw me off. Or nothing will happen, and I just feel crappy. In my experiences, these situations are helpful in that they alert me to some resistance. I do think also that this might be our mind still trying to hold onto stuff that we are wanting to release.
Whether or not we have to dive into something and poke around really depends on our intuitive pull. Sometimes we just have bad days because something happened we didn’t like or we are just not feeling super-high energy, and it really has nothing to do with a particular thing we are trying to manifest. Just rolling with it, and doing what we can to feel better is usually sufficient.
But, when it is related to some deeper issue we know is surfacing recently, then it can be good to think about what might be triggering our feeling or a particular manifestation.
Either way, we want to be compassionate with ourselves, and accept that our mood will often be in flux from day to day, or even hour to hour.
Hey Kelli,
Sorry about how happened. Hope you’re feeling better.
whenever I get a surge of negative thoughts or feelings around something I want to accomplish I try to counter them. I think of examples where it has worked out before. If all else fails I try to change my focus.
Being grateful also helps put me back in the right mental space.
~Lea
Hey Lea
Thanks..I am getting better. That strategy is super-powerful and one of my favorites. When we can show our mind that something has worked before, it can appease it a bit, and it will stop fighting us as much on the particular thing we are hoping to improve, manifest or whatever. Changing focus is great..we can have a hard time doing that sometimes I think because of beliefs like no pain no gain, we have to stare down a problem until we find a way to fix it, taking control,etc.. That willingness to walk away not only shows we trust it will work out, but the energy shifts can allow in all sorts of stuff that will help us.
Hi KC,
When you have a guy who’ll lift you up, or even yell in your direction, to help you manifest a new vibe, wow, then you’re set.
LUV ya……:)
Ryan
Yes, the yelling in my direction can be quite helpful…always a lesson to be learned! Love you too!
Hey Kelli,
Did you have a recent mishap with a bike? Bless your heart, I hope you’re doing okay. Those crappy thoughts can sure mess things up for us from time to time can’t they? Even for someone who knows better too, they just can’t be helped at times.
I loved this post actually, I think it’s my favorite so far. Especially when you said:
“You will get frustrated sometimes that certain beliefs and feelings appear to be lingering, even after you know there is no validity to them—this shit runs deep, and it can take a bit for this knowing to really get to the core.”
Bingo… Need I say more! I’ve done SO MUCH WORK on myself and 99.99% of the time I’m in the happiest darn place ever but that 0.1% is the most annoying shit I’ve ever had to deal with in my life. I can’t seem to get rid of it for the life of me. Just when I think I have because I KNOW there is no validity to it at all I’ll find that I’m still stuck.
I’ve shared this with you before. I’m still working on it and I will conquer this. It will not beat me, I refuse to let it! LOL!!!
Thanks for sharing this and I’ll be sure to share it as well. Great message I know so many others really need to hear too.
Take care of yourself now.
~Adrienne
Hi Adrienne
I am doing much better..today I can actually walk almost completely normally so hopefully in a few days I will be fully healed. Luckily, it wasn’t a big accident, just got scratched up really badly because the road was rocky and unpaved. Some interesting stuff came up as a result and I see perfectly why I manifested it, so it’s all good. I’m just glad the resistance wasn’t buried too deeply or went unchecked for too long, or it probably would have been way worse an accident!
That feeling of being stuck can be super-frustrating, and in most cases, it results from unexpressed emotion, particularly anger. So, that is something to think about. Even when we feel good most of the time, we can have some stuff running in the background that is heavier than we realize it to be. It may feel a bit scary to let it out, but once we do, we can really gain some clarity, and get some energy moving in a good direction.
You have a good attitude and I have no doubt you will conquer it…from what I have seen, you are pretty good at this manifesting thing. We all have our ‘blind spots’ where things can be a bit more challenging so you are certainly not alone in that experience.
I hope you have recovered from the bike injury when you are reading this comment. I have experienced similar thoughts on attraction and resistance in my own life while learning to say ‘No’ to people. I was a very easy going person and people used to take advantage or credit of me just because I could not say ‘No”. However, I worked hard on myself resisting the urge for helping others and balanced it with fine judgement. Wishing you a fast recovery (if you haven’t recovered by now).
Hi Pooja
Thanks so much…I am getting much better. Almost back to walking normally! That is great you were able to overcome that tendency and set some boundaries. I think a lot of people have that same issue of not being able to say no to people. We don’t want to seem selfish, want to please others, be helpful, etc…but, when we are doing things we really don’t want to be doing, or we are sacrificing our own well being in some way, then it is time to re-evaluate. It can be hard to break the pattern as people were probably very used to that ‘yes.’
It all comes down to realizing our worth and that our happiness, time and whatever else, is just as valuable as anyone else’s.
It was good to know about your recovery. The last line you wrote “realising our worth and whatever else” is really very thoughtful. I have noted it in my diary. Thanks
Thanks Pooja
Writing things down can be very helpful, whether it is thing we want to remind ourselves of, journaling, setting intentions or writing out our current fears and frustrations. It can help us focus, and give us clarity.
